DEATH OF A S23.000 COW. "Washington, Aup. 4 Mrs, Sam xiel M. Shoemaker has lost by death ' from inflammation of the lnngs tho world renowned cow, "Princess Sec- 5 ond," which astonished the world by giving in seven days a yield of forty six pounds and ten and a half ounces of butter. This test of her butter qualities was completed April 10, 18S5. Some time after tho test the blankets were taken off rather sud denly, it is thought, and she took a fine butter producer. One of tho se crets of her immense yield of butter was her great vitality aud appetite. During the very height of the test, when she was fed as large quantity j ot imltcr-prouucing food as it was thought sbo could safely bear, she broke loose one night and consumed over two hundred pounds of prepared food in a box in the stable. About two years ago Mrs. Shoemaker re fused $2o,000 for her. She was eight years and six months old when she died. She was an imported cow, and was bonght at aucliou in New York for $1,800. She-was ot the celebrated Coomassie strain. Her last calf was sold during an absence from home of Mrs. Shoemaker for $10,000, but the sale did not stand, Mrs. Shoemaker .refusing to ratify it on her return. special to Jjouiscille Courier-Journal. Seeing Strange Lands. After a trip of about a month and a half Lieut J. P. O'Neill and H. Hawgood, civil engineer, of Van couver, aud E. P.Habersham, accom panied by a squad of soldiers, return ed Tuesday from a reconuoisauce of the Olympia range in Washington territory. The expedition was made by direction of tho federal govern ment, and the object was lo ascertain the quality of the land, and for what purpose it conld be used. The coun try is a mountainous one, not adapt ed for farming, is almost devoid of timber, but good grazing sections were found in many places. The purest kind of spring water can be obtained in abundance without diffi culty, and some fine trout are to bo found in many of the smaller streams. Deer and elk wero very numerous, and at times were seen in droves. Mr. Habersham's sketching expe dition was spoiled by tho smoke of the forest fires. A sudden recall was tho cause of Lieut. O'Neill's return, and the major portion of the proposed work has been left undone.
