Arvold's, Squemoqua St. PIRATE LAFITTE. The Exploits of a Celebrated Dare-Devil and His Cans. They were sad dare-devils, those old buccaneers, who tailed about arnonjr the "West India islands, through the bright waters of the Lrull ot Atexico aau aiong me iiuan tic sea coast. They thought nothing of going up the deeper rivers to the plantations of rice and indigo, and, after loading their vessels, would pil- lace and burn the residences, tuen depart, leaving the poor planters to deplore the ruiu of their nomesteaus and the loss of their crops. It was also very dangerous to go by sea from southern ports to New York, as was shown by the case of Mrs. Alston. She was Theodora, the only daughter of the distinguished Aaron Burr, a lovely and accomplished woman, who married Governor Alston of South Caf olina. "When her father was to be tried for high treason. Lira. Alston gathered up all the handsomo family silver plate, and with her husband's consent, set off in a ship for New York, where it was to be sold for her father's .benefit But alas! neither vessel nor lady was ever heard of again, and as there was no storm to have occasioned disaster, the pirates were always supposed to have cap tured and destroyed them. Governor Alston offered largo rewards for in formation, but no tidings of Mrs. Al ston's fate ever reached him, and it was only many years after that one of the miscreants made a dying confes sion aud admitted the facts, stating that he had ever been haunted by the remembrance of the crime. The pi rales had had spies in Charleston, who notified them of the sailing of the ship with the valuable silverware aboard; they had laid in wait for her, taken possession of her on the high seas, and made the unfortunate pass engers and crew "walk tho plank." Mrs. Alston had refused to have her eyes blindfolded; with tho most he roic courago and composure, all dressed in white, her beautiful face raised to heaven and the Bible clasped to her heart, she bravely stepped for ward into eternity. Another story which dates still fur ther back into the past is the fato of Steed Bonnet, a desperate robber. His depredations and interruptions to commerce, made him a terror to the coast of Carolina, until at length Governor Sir Nathaniel John son fitted out a sloop-of-war and sent Colonel William Ituetfc in pursuit of him. They met him at the mouth or Cane Fear river, where an engage ment took place. The pirate's ship was boarded and captured, and he, and those of his crew who remained alive, were taken to Charleston, where they were tried aud jon demned. So one pleasant, sunshiny morning in November. 1718, Steed Bonnet and thirty-two of his men were hanged at White Point Garden. This public garden forms the southern point of Charleston, at the confluence of the Ashley aud Cooper rivers, and has been called the Bat tery ever since the revolutionary war, when an earthwork was erected there, and cannon mounted, which were ex pected to drive back the British if thev succeeded in passing Port Moul- lirie. Most happily, however, thev were never called into action, as the English were defeated. The last of tho buccaneers was tho celebrated Lafitte, who for many years carried on his illicit traffic in defiance of the government. His crew of smugglers and pirates occupied the bay of Barataria, where they had for tified an island. A price was set up- Lon his head, but it is said that he was frequently seen in 2xew Orleans, and had friends, and even a banker who received his ill-gotten gains "under the rose.'' There are so many lakes and bayous along the coast of Louis iana and Mississippi that the light, swift crafts ol the pirates could al ways elnde pursuit and slip away in to some inlet or behind an island, when they found an enemy on their track. All the Spanish fishermen, who were inimical to tho United states, wcro m their pay, and gave notice by private signals whero there was danger to be apprehended, and so they enjoyed comparative immun ity from the consequences ot their misdeeds. This daring robber deserves our praise for his patriotism, however, for when the Jiiughsh came to attack New Orleans, in 1S15, Sir Edward Paken ham, the commander of their forces, Lafitte a big reward if he would as sist his army by showing them the passes to the city, which nono knew so well as this skillful pilot But La fitte refused his bribe and sent word to General Jackson that if he would, insure his men a free pardon for past offenses they would como up and help him to defend tho city. As they were known to have bold hearts, and to be skillful artillerists, Gover nor Claiborne willingly granted this request, and so Lafitte, his men and his guns arrived and did good ser vice in tho day ot our necessity. In New York last Tuesday tho jury acquitted Mrs. Dudley, who shot O'Donovan Bossa, on the ground of insanit'. The jury was only in con sultation about five minutes when they rendered their verdict A mo tion was .made to send Mrs. Dudley to the state lunatic asylnm, which her counsel opposed. Tho latter asked that their client be permitted to bo returned to her native country, and be placed in an institution there. The courts will listen to arguments on this motion to-day. EUROPEAN TOPICS. Londok, June 30. The death of Emperor "William promises to bo the next great sensation in .Lurope. Ex traordinary precautions are being taken to prevent tho sending of any telegram revealing hi3 real condition, but private letters not subject to offi cial censorship give such discourag ing forecasts that the news of Ins death is daily expected. In official circles in England the death of the aged Kaiser is looked upon as an ev ent of the very near future, and the extent to which this occurrence is calculated upon seems surprising and heartless, xts immediate political effect will be to bind England and Germany together in very closo un ion. The crown princess of England will be empress of Germany, and the coming omperor is known as an affectionate friend of the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria. .Nothing more opportune for tue new lory government of England could possibly occur. With an An glo-German alliance firmly estab lished, difficulties in the way of En gland's foreign policies would disap pear as if by magic, and the Salis bury ministry would get tho credit of results wrought by a dispensation of providence. It is rumored that all this was counted upon in tho very highest circles in the two realms be fore Lord Salisbury finally consent ed to take office, and that it very largely influenced his decision. Tombstoke, June 30. A. J. Han eke, a miner, brought news yester day from Fronteras of au engage ment between Indians and whites last Thursday, thirty miles southeast of Fronteras, in which it is reported that thirty-six Indians and sixteen Americans were killed and several wounded. To-day further informa tion wa3 received through Thomas Crocker, from San Bernardino ranch, situated on the trail from Fort Bowie to Sonora. Ho reports an engage ment between the entire force under Lieutenant Davi3 and the Apaches. Sixteen Indians were killed and fifteen or twenty taken prisoner. The loss of tho whites is not stated. New York, July 1. The Tcleuram's Washington special says: General Grant's brother-in-law said to-day: "I am afraid that General Grant will not last many more days. To-day I re ceived informaation from the family that the cancer has commenced to in flame the jugular vein, and death is the question of a few days, in the opinion of his physicians.'' Bloo;l IClot in Mexico. Foolish as it seems, tho riot was all about sjiuc nicklo coins which had recently been issned by the Mexican Government, and which the Mexicans disliked. A small cause, surely. But blood corpuscles are only one twenty-eight-hundredth part as big as ono of our five-cent nickles. Aud yet what a circus they stir up if anything goes wrong with them! Mrs. Brannan, of Ivanhoe, Ga., says: "I used Brown's Iron Bitters with best results for ex treme nervousness, sleeplessness, and bad blood." Port Towksekd, June 30. The Enos Soule, reported ashore at Pro tection island, was gotten off this evening without damage and has ar rived at her destination, Port Towns end. Worno than a Rerolver. In commenting on several cases in that city whero children died, from the effects of taking cough syrup contain ing morphia, the editor of an Omaha paper remarkes that opiates, poisons and narcotics are more dangerous than firearms. Mothers should note this and also that different Boards of Health, after careful analyses, have certified that the only purely vegeta ble preparation of this kiud, and one that is harmeless, and effective, is Bed Star Cough Cure. The Commissioner ofH'althof Baltimore publicly en dorses it Denver, Col., June 30. The News has just received tho follewing: "Ig nacio, Colorado, head chief of the TJtes, promises no further retaliation for the assassination of the TJte family of six on Friday morniug, June 19th. Peace is seenred." This is signed by Hallsheimer the agent The Brant r of Tonth. No matter how handsome and stal wart a young man may be otherwise, nothing can make up for a partially bald head.
