Washington, May 2G. It is ex
pected that the committee engaged
in counting the money and securities
finished and unfinshed at the bureau
of engraving and printing, will finish
its work to-morrow. .Everything has
been found to tally as perfectly as
did the millions in tho treasury
vaults. Everything and every sheet
or paper that is so care
fully guarded has been found
in its proper place It is possible
that not a few democratic citi
zens of this country, deceived by the
turgid harangues of Mr. Hendricks
and other "offensive partisan" cam
paign orators, have really believed
that the treasury department was as
corrupt as Babylon of old, full of dark
and mysterious abominations which
would all bo brought to light when
the books should be scanned by the
sharp eyes of Democratic officials.
Ever since tho count began these
people have been sitting with ears
agog listening for the crack of
doom. It may well ba imagined,
that a feeling of disappointment por
vades the Democratic heart because
there was nothing found to yell over.
Certainly no higher compliment could
bo paid to tho honesty and efficacy of
the Republican administration than
is contained in the mere fact that
after twenty-fonr years of power,
during which billions upon billions of
dollars have flowed in and out
through all tho devious channels of
business, tho cash is found to bal
ance, even to tho uttermost farthing.
Sir Peter Lnmsdcn's Views.
CoxsTAxriNOPiiB, June 3. Sir Pe

foresees future complications from
the boundary having been brought
across tho desert, with a neutral line
of eighty miles of waste country
for tbo Bussians to cross. Better
safeguards against aBussian advance
could have been had than are any
promises to respect tho new Afghan
irontier. Bussia is now, through pos
session of the Penjdeh district, in a
position to provoko fresh complica
tions, whenever it suits her policy to
vex England; for instance, by sup
porting Turcoman claims to' some
further pasturajto or uso of water
sheds, and thereby bring about a
collision with tho Afghans. Bussia
wants an ethnographical frentier: 1
proposed a geological one. The
ameer has now 15,0iX) men at Herat,
but when tho Russians first ad vauced
that place was quite open, and it
would have fallen at once, for the
population wero and even now to
some extent are siding with the Bus
sians." The team attached to Governor
Moody's private family carriage ran
away Tuesday in Salem, and the co
cupauts had a narrow escape from
fatal injuries. Governor Moody was
thrown out and received some severe
bruises, and his daughter in jumping
out sprained her ankle. Tho other
parties, four in number, were not in
jured, although tho carriage was al

the Westinghouse signal for stopping
trains. It has now superceded the
old system of bell ropes entirely. It
is an air signal and operates similarly
to the air brake. A pipe runs through
all the cars and is connected with ti
small whistle in the engine cab,
which can be sonuded by the con

great difference in personal habits of
the population. It costs $273 a year

One of the chief uses to which
castor oil is now put is that of dress
ing and softening leather for boots.
It was formerly used for dosing
childreU whose stomachs were dis
ordered. And an awful dose it was.
Now we give suffering children
Brown's Iron Bitters, which tones
the stomach, regulates digestion, and
imparts strength to tho whole body.
Brown's Iron Bitters is incomparably
better than castor oil, and more
pleasant to take.
In 18G6 the average for white labor
in the United States was S2S per
month, without board, and $15.50 with
board, this difference being caused by
the high prices for food and other ex
penses of living. An estimate of
thirty years before made $9 per
month, with board, the average cost
for farm labor. An advance of 70 per
cent was thus indicated, much the
larger part of it between 1881 and
1SGG. In 1SG0 the rate for labor paid
fully in cash was $25.13, a reduction
having occurred in tho west, some de
cline in the east, while in tho south
an advance had resulted from increas
ing efficiency in labor. In 1875 a f nr-
ther decline had occurred, the reduc
tion in six years being from S32.0S to
S29.96 in the east, from S28.02 to
S2G.02 in the middle states, and from
$27.01 to $23.60 in the west
