J A Market for Old Hat, j F. g-1 K lS jgi CT O
The group of ialamls known as tho i
J icobars, situated about 150 miles '
south of the Amlamans, has been but
! little exDlored. though the manners
and coiidtoras of the inhabitant"? of
these islands oifer ven- interesiog
peculiarities lo tho notice ot the J
iceable of these, and one winch sen-
ouslv affects the trade of the islands, J
is the passion for old hats, which,
Hhout exception, pervades the whole
frame-work of society. No one is ex
empt from it. Youm; and old. chief
ami subject, alike endeavor to outvie
each other in the singularity of shape
ro Jew
ihau in the number bf old hats

time. On a Hue morning at the
Nicobnrs it is no unusual thing to
see t he surface of the ocean in the
vieinilj ot the islands dotted over
with canoes, in each of which the
noble savage, with nothing whatever
on but the conventional slip ot cloth
and a tall, white hat with a black
baud, may be watched standing up
and catching fish for his daily meal.
Second-hand hats are mo3t in request
now hats being looked xipon with
suspicion and disfavor. This curious
passion i3 so well known that traders
from Calcutta make annnal excur
sions to tho Nieobnra with cargoes of
old hats, which they barter for cocoa
nuts, the only preduc: ot these is
lands, a good, tall white hat, with a
black band, fetching from fifty-five to
sixty-live good cocoannts. Intense
excitement pervades the island while
tne trade is going on, aud fancy prices
are often asked and obtained. When
the hats or cocoannts haveoit length
come to an end, the trader generally
lands a cask or two of rum, and the
whole rnpnlationn their hats get
drunk, without intermission, until
the rum also comes lo an end. It is
curious that iti those far away regions
so profitable a market shf.uld lie
found for cast-off specimens of one
symitol of civilization. Tho same
yearning after belter things in a
mors advanced stage may be observ
ed in Madagascar, where no officer is
content if he cannot deck himelf
I out in the tarnished plnmaso of some
long defunct Admiral. (Jeneral or
Ambaador. -Jwlterx (foftt.
