STEAMSHIP LOST AT SEA. Halifax, May 1L The White Cross line Belgian steamer Helvetia, "vrith general cargo which started from Antwerp April 23rd for Mont real, sunk off Scatterie, Capo Broton, on Saturday. Tliis is the fourth steamer of that lino which has been lost within as many years. In 1831 tho steamer August (J. Andre sailed from New York for Antwerp and was never heard of. In the fall of 1S83, the Herman Ludwig sailed from Montreal for Antwerp with a crew of thirty men and cargo, and that wa3 the last heard of her. Thirteen months ago tho Daniel Sieinmann crashed on the rocks ct Sambro is lands and 124 lives were lost. The Helvetia makes the fourth vessel that has met with disaster. A rather remarkable coincidence is that Cap tain Schoonhaven, who commanded the Daniel Steinmann, was also in command of the Helvetia, and this was the first passage across the At lantic which he had made since the wreek of the Steinmann. The Hel vetia arrived in the Gulf of St. Law rence over a.week ago, and had been knocking about in the ice for seven or eight days. Her bows were stove in, and she was otherwise damaged by ice, and was leaking badly on Friday, when Captain Schoonhaven left Capo Bay and bore up for Sid ney, having all ho could do to keep his ship afloat Saturday a heavy sea sprang up and he hailed the Allan lino steamer Arcadian whioh was passing. The Arcadian . took the- Helvetia in tow and headed for Louisburg, but had not gone far be fore Captain Schoonhaven called that he was sinking. Boats were lowered and passengers and crew got into them as soon as possible, but none too soon. The last boat had hardly got clear before the Helvetia careened over and sunk. Tho steam er Arcadian then put back to the strait of Canso and landed the surviv ors at Port Hawkesbury. Idaho Mormons Defy the Law. Salt Lake, May 11 A letter dated tho 10th, received from Oxford, Ida"ho , says: "The greatest excitement pre vails at Bear lake. On tho 5th war rants were placed in the hand3 of three deputy marshals for tho arrest of eight polygamists at and around Paris. Nothing was heard from the matter here until this morning, when telegrams announcing tho fact that the polygamists were all corralled in the meeting house at Paris, under protection of an armed guard of brothren on tho outside, were re ceived. Tho deputy marshals who attempted to make the arrest were marched out of Paris by an armed mob, who threatened that they will kill any ono who attempts to serve a warrant. Marshal Fied DuBois, up on receipt of this news, immediately telegraphed Superintendent Bleck ensderfer at Pocatello, and chartered a special train to convey himself and posso to "Montpelier, from whioh point he will reach Paris about 5 p.m. to-day, (Sunday). Marshal DuBois' reputation for courage and discretion is all tho guaranty tho people of Idaho need that resistance on the part of tho Mormons will result in credit to tho United States and dis grace to the misguided law-defiers in the church. A three days' conference is being held at Paris ending to-day. A IJfc SnViujr. Trcscnt. Mr. M. E.
