(2) ASTORIA, OKEGON: FRIDAY.. MARCH 27.1685 HIDDEN TREASURE. Evebt year or so some imagin ative Bohemian o the "Washing ton press revives the old story o nntold wealth in the form o jewels that are hidden away in the vanlts of the treasury department Each time the value of the treasure is magnified until at last accounts seven or eight figures are required to express it In point of fact, there is a quart or more of precious stones in the bond vault of the treasurer's of fice, but, singular as it may appear, no one can be found who has any con ception of their value. About thirty years ago, during Pierce's time, an eastern potentate with an unpro nounceable name sent to the presi dent of the United States several swords heavily jeweled, a bottle of attar of roses and a jeweled casket The swords and presents could not be received by the president, inas much as a clause in the constitution prohibits the acceptance of gifts of this character. Etiquette prevented their being sent back and they prom ised to become a white elephant on the government's hands. In this dilemma they were deposit ed in a case in the model-room of the patent office, where they remained for years, until a clever thief, who went for that purpose, succeded in stealing them. After the lapse of some months the jewels were recap tured and placed in the treasury vault for safe keeping. There for eight years have they remained sealed up in bottles and hidden away in a rough pine box out of sight and almost for gotten, except by those to whose keeping they are especially intrusted. These custodians of the vault differ widely as to the value of the con tents. One says the lot would be cheap at $100,000, while another thinks $1,500 a stiff price for the whole assortment No one owns them. The United States really has no more title to them than the king of the cannibal islands, except that the United States holds possession. The jewels are liable any day to be stolen again, and treasurer Wyman says the successful thief will probably reap the benefit of the haul next time, as it would be exceedingly doubtful if the ownership of the gov ernment could be established. There is only one way in which the treasure can bo disposed of, and that is by amending the constitution so as to al low the heirs of ex-President Pierce to dispose of it The curious visitor to the treasury department inquires for it iuvariably and eyes the rough pine box which incloses it with a look of wonder and awe. Sometimes the box is handled roughly, and on such occasions the subtile odor of attar of roses fills the vault for days. People who suffer will fly to any thing for remedy even to patent pills spiritualism, and pilgrimages. Eefer ring to the methods resorted to for curing the crippled and sick, the Gh'aphic says that at Fecamp 150,000 xjuart bottles from a so-called holy spring are sold yearly; atLourdes the retail business in water is twice as large, and the grotto is hung with the crutches of hundreds of people who are said to have come lame and to gone away jumping. In. some cases these cures have been quite genuine, for a strong nervous excitement will unquestionably do wonders. Not long ago, a man who was suddenly seized with delirium in one of the London . hospitals leaped up, and began slash ing at the patients in the beds all around him with a knife. One pa tient, who had been lying helplessfor days under a stroke of paralysis, as it was believed, got so frightened that he recovered the use of his legs, and bounded down stairs with the most gratifying agility. A man endowed with strong will power may exercise ascendency over weak-willed folks, and cause them very rapidly to Bhake off a nervous disorder. TheN. JL Fairbank Canning Co. of Chicago, has received during the last seven days cable orders for can nod beef for the use of the British army, which, coupled with an addi tional order received on the 25th, makes the aggregate amounts to be shipped 4,000,000 younds. The orders came from the British war depart ment, the destination of the meats being "Woolwich. It will require two weeks to 11 the orders now on hand. The Armour Packing Co. is also in re ceipt of orders to supply 5,400,000 pounds. These are the largest orders ever received in Chicago, and owing to their magnitude the supposition is they are to meet a war emergency. The canning houses are working day and night in order to meet these de mands. An order for 100,000 cases Columbia -river salmon would not come anme. Salmon is splendid diet for fighters. Something more "than half of the enormous Egyptian debt is held in England. The Egyptian finances are in a very bad condition, and heavy taxation, even heavier than the griev ous iaxation of past years, is inevita ble. By the new law foreigners who have hitherto escaped taxation are to be taxed, but it is very certain they will evade tne levy, and the poor fel laheen will, as usual, bear the heaviest burden. The great debt of Egypt was the work of Khedive Ismail, who in 1862-4 borrowed, in two loans S50, 000,000, and in 1863 had increased the figures to $125,000,000, and when he was deposed he had brought the amount up to 450,000,000. Keab Adutra.Ii Jokett, command er of the north Atlantic squadron, is reported to have said before leaving Washington for New Orleans: "The French are at the bottom of the Cen tral American war intending thus to prevent the construction of any but the Panama canal," and adding, "we will have to take a hand in this mat ter, and the Booner the better. Fif teen thousand workmen on the Pan ama canal are French soldiers." A Pobtlakd assayer visited Tilla mook recently to ascertain the faots relating to the reported silver discov ery m that locality. He assayed rock from tunnels run in the mountains and the highest grade he found was in one ounce of rock from which he got three-fourths of an ounce of pure silver. There are several tunnels be ing run and much interest is mani fested regarding the discovery.
