ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY
.... MARCH U. 15S5
A GoxsECTicrx jury places the
value of a laan's ear at 2,000. The
jnan -wanted S10.000.
It is announced that the Canadian
Pacific railway will be completed by
the third week in August
Mail bags from Cincinnati were
recently delivered in Berlin in the
short space of eleven days.
The wealth of England has appar
ently doubled since 18i5, that of
France since ISoG, and that of the
United States since 18G4.
One of the curious things discovered
by the publication of Thomas Jeffer
son's diary is that he paid in one year
$100 for washing and S1.G5S.94 for
winc.
, Obmax Digka naya EI Mahdi in
tends to restore the whole Nile val
ley, from source to mouth, to Mo
hammedan control, and after he has
taken Cairo he will send envoys to
Constantinople, inviting the sultan
to form an alliKiice with him against
all Christendom.
Edwakd Atkinson of liostou, who
is a recognized authority in mat
ters of statistics, has been calculating
the total value of the annual product
of our silver lnhipfi. and he finds that
it is not equal to the value of the
annual production of hens eggs in
the United Stales.
Pnoi'iwson Pnocrou believes that
at least I wo or the planets, Vesuvius
and Mars, have atmospheres like our
own, that they have seas, lakes, riv
ers and continents and that they are
inhabited probably by people not
much different from those on this
earth. Jupiter and Saturn he be
Jieves are peopled by races bearing
no resemblance to those on this
planet.
Last Thursday, talking of appoint
ments, Cleveland said: "Appoint
ments will be made only as places be
come vacant, and vacancies will occur
only by expiration of the term for
which the present holder was ap
pointed, or by removal, which in ev
en case will bo for good cause, to be
proved by the presentation of charges
and specifications backed by evidence
such as would be accepted in a court
of law. When appointments aro to
be mr.de, Democrats will, of course,
be selected. As to removals for cause
it is undoubtedly safe to say that
those public officers who have made
notorious use of their places for par
tisan purposes will bo the first to go.
The new administration will hasten
to restore them to private life as soon
as charges against them are proved,
and to appoint their Democratic suc
cessors." The woman puffrcge association of
Massachusetts has discussed the
proposition that the dogma incor
porated in the religious creeds de
rived from Judaism, teaching that
woman was an after thought in crea
tion, her sex a misfortune, marriage a
subordination, aud maternity a curse,
are contrary to the law of God as re
vealed in nature and the precepts of
Christ. One debater exculpated Ju
daism from responsibility for the
degradation of women. A minister
followed suit, and also defended early
Christianity, and an Episcopalian lay
man declared that until the church,
Catholic, Episcopal, or Methodist,
recognized the right of women to be
bishops and to ordain others to the
ministry, the work of equality can
never be accomplished. This last
speaker had found the pulpit a center
of opposition to woman suffrage, and
later it was arraigned as a stumbling
block in the way of temperance; but
finally Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
declared that "every form of religion
that has breathed upon this earth has
degraded woman," an opiniou in
which she will find few t agree with
her.
Thrki: generations of Bayards fig
ure in American political history..
James A. 1'ayarJ was a warm friend
and supporter of Alexander Hamilton
and was a member of the house of
representatives when the memorable
campaign of 1309 between Thomas
Jefferson and Aaron Burr threw the
election of a president into the hands
of the Assembly, lie was elected
senator in 1S01 and one of the com
missioners to negotiate peace with
Great Britain in 1813. The father of
Thomas F., also named James A-
Bayard, served continuously in the
United States senate from 1851 to
186-1, when he resigned. He and his
son Thomas, were elected on the same
day, Jannary 19th, 18G0, by the same
legislature to the United States sen
ate, the father to fill the unexpired
term of George Beade Biddle and the
son to the full term succeeding it, the
only instance in the nation's history
of a like character. Thos. F. Bayard
was born in October, 1523, and is in
his fifty-seventh year. He is a lawyer
by education and Is a recognized au
thority on constitutional law. Yet
there has been nothing brilliant in
Bayard's legal or political career. He
has been simply painstaking and la
borious. His position at the outbreak
of the rebellion and his strong sym
pathy with the south has done much
to damage him politically, while his
lack of strongly marked character has
created distrust of him among his
associates. There has never been
any question of his honor or his hon
esty during his long service in the
senate, but no one will look to him
for a spirited foreign policy, as he
lacks the qualities which are needed
for such a line of action a3 conspicu
ously a3 Frelinghuysen lacks them.
