The News suggests that the Oregon
f ruit-grovrers make exhibition of their
products at the great southern and
southwestern expositions next fall and
winter. The idea is a good one.
An old maid's club in Illinois has
come out for Blaine and Logan. The
spinsters argue that men whose wives
caa manage them ought to be able to

Tekxessek Mormons seem to be
out of luck. Last Sunday, several
residents of Lewis county, tiring of
their presence killed three Mormon
elders and strongly urged the surviv
ing missionaries to go back to Utah.
As if starvation did not convey hor
ror enough to the late Arctic expedi
tion it now is clear that cannibalism
and the taking of life in an effort to
preserve military discipline furnished
additional horrors. The whole chap
ter is a frightful one and no occasion
should be allowed for another like it.
Thousands have dreamed of for
tune at the bottom of the sea; few
have found it. Even the Huzzar de
clines to yield its treasure, if it ever
held any. A Philadelphia man named
Boyle appears to have struck a
bonanza in the neighborhood of Vigo,
Spain. He has got on the track of
several sunken galleons supposed to
oontain untold wealth in gold and
silver. They have been nearly two
hundred years under water, but that
need not impair their value. If they
could only be fished up in time to be
of use in the present campaign it
might be well for Ben Butler to cul
The Atlanta Constitution, specu
lating upon the fact that the patent
upon paper collars and shirt-bosoms
has expired, is of opinion that we
may soon expect to see paper gar
ments of every variety manufactured
and sold. But it fears opposition to
the general use of such material for
clothing on the ground that no man
would care to wear a suit of clothes
liable at any moment to melt away
if he is caught in a shower or to be
torn into shreds when he is passing
through a crowd. Nobody would
risk going to a picnic in a paper suit,

Ben Butler will stand. He is wait
ing for Cleveland to speak before he
announces his reasons. Cleveland,
he argues, had the advantage of read
ing Blaine, and Butler intends to
have the advantage of reading Cleve
land. The incomparably mixed can
vass is sure therefore of an extraordi
nary unknown quantity being added
to its present conflicting elements.
Since 1856, when the Know-Nothing
candidate ran in opposition to Demo
crat and Kepublican and carried the
state of Maryland, no absolutely dis
tinct third party candidate has ap
peared with such chances of strong
backing. The divisions of 1860 were
of another character splits in a
great overgrown party. What state
will Ben Butler carry?
Thb old-fashioned idea was that the
road to wealth was found by brains.
"We have chauged all that. Wo now
cultivate legs and arms. A simple
scholar has but a poor chance in the
race for riches with a trained athlete.
Look at our pedestrians, our pitchers,
our rowers, our sluggers all men of
muscle, and millionaires. Look at
Bair, who drove Maud S., and who
made $10,000 at a single lick the oth
er day. Would he exchange places
with a college professor on 1,200
a year and an occasional present of
turnips? We think not Archer, the
English jockey, is a richer man to
day than two-thirds of the profes
sional men in England. Biches are
not everything, it is true, but they
make a man "powerful independent"
Senator Morgan, of the congres
sional committee, in New York says:
"We shall visit San Francisco, to ex
amin e the resources for the manu
facture of steel and the turning out
of heavy armament for vessels, with
a view to establishing, with private
capital and government aid, if needed,
a heavy plant on the Pacific coast.
There should be one of these plants
at San Francisco, another for the
Gulf and a third at some-point on the
Atlantic seaboard between Beaufort
and Portsmouth. When established
they can be distributing points for all
armament needed for coast defense. I
favor a plan for competing with for
eign countries for trade with South
American nations in this line of ma
terial. There is no good reason why
San Francisco should not supply
what our neighbors need along the
entire Paoific coast"
News from the north is to the ef
fect that the salmon run has been a
tremendous one, and all the canner
ies have illled their tins and are salt
ing the fish. At the Owekayno
cannery on Kivers inlet 12,000 cases
were filled in 26 days. The Wannuck
packing company, on the same inlet,
and the Quashela cannery, on Smith's
inlet have also filled. The Inverness,
Alert, Windsor, Balmoral, Cunning
ham, British America and Chanti
cleer canneries all send down the
same report of more fish than they
can handle. As a light catch was an
ticipated the canners were not pre
pared for a great run, and the aggre
gate number of cases put up will not
be nearly as large as last year. The
total pack of the northern canneries
is placed at 110,000 cases and 6,500
barrels of salmon.
The state department presents es
timates of the foreign supply and
demand for grain, etc., the present
year, based on consular reports for
several years past For these sources
it is estimated that the wheat import
ing countries will require 375,250,000
bushels of which the United States
will be called upon to furnish 188,
151,000 bushels. The total wheat
acreage of this country is placed at
38,500,000 acres, which, at an aver
age yield of thirteen bushels per
acre, will produce 500,000,000 bushels.
This will be ample to supply our
home wants and furnish our required
proportion for foreign demand. Our
prospects for a good wheat crop are
excellent; and if the department's
estimates prove true, fair if not high
prices may be expected.
