HENRY DOYLE & CO., 517 and 519, MARKET STREET SAN FRANCISCO. HFTAgents for the Pacific Coast. Ff Petering Oct. George Eoss, formerly of this city irat later or Portland, says ilio AvnUa Walla Journal, is in town, having just returned from a six months' res idenco in the Cceur d'Aleno miner. He says that he has spared no ex pense nor labor to tret at the true inwardness of the mines, and, much to his regret, he cannot speak hope fully of their future. There are two or three claims near Murrayville that are paying and may be termed good claims, but they are all, and even they do not promise sufficiently to give any great encouragement. As to quartz mining there is none. The only gold-bearing quartz, if any, so far discovered, is the mother lode, but there is so much mystery connected with that, that its claim to respecta bility is doubted. Some silver-bearing lodes are known, but their inac cessibility will preclude their successful development. Eagle is a cooked goose nothing of it and never will be. Lots that had sold for $1,000 and $1,500 can now be readily purchased at 825, He thinks he can go down in the old abandoned Jackson county diggings and make 810 for every SI they are making in the Coeur d' Alone mines. Murray is a brisk place at present and will bo for some time. There are, he think?, 5,000 people in the mountains, and many that do not know where the next meal is to oomo from. Corsets Mnde of Bark. The bayaderes of India, who possess the most perfect figures of any women of any country on earth, have a much more healthful and charming-device than any Europeans. Their corsets are formed out of the bark of the Madagascar tree, on a principle which permits them every freedom of move ment in breathing and in any form of exercise. These are wonderful pro ductions of ingenuity. The color re sembles the skin to a remarkable de gree, and the material is so fine that the most delicate touch will hardly distinguish it from hnman flesh. Once made, these corsets are seldom removed, the bayaderes even sleeping in them. They thus preserve aston ishingly beautiful figures to an ad vanced age, without pam or discom fort to themselves, while we, who boast ourselves intellectual and civ ilized, torture without beautifying ourselves. New York fishermen are guilty of a mean caper. They sink a net and then lower an incandescent electric light over it into the water. Now, it is a well known fact that this is a presidential year, and that torchlight processions and ratification meetings attract bullheads and suckers. What, then, is the result? Tho fish are attracted by the light, they come in crowds, expecting to hear the band play and the speeches, only to be hauled on shore, to be sold in the market. The whole scheme, while novel and profitable, looks like a polit ical trick, and should be discounte nanced, by tho fish, at least W. H. Trenwitb, of this city, says the New York Tribune, is nbsolntely certain that the world will come to an end on the 5th ot July, 1885, and has written a pamphlet to prove it. He says: "Oh, how are the people to be warned of the day that is now at hand?'' Mr. Trenwith might put an ,sad" in the daily papers. That would certainly be a better way than to write a pamphlet which no one will read. Mr. E. M. Drinkard, Teller, Second National Bank, "Washington, D.
