C3 'ui, fo ga gwtforfiwr. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY JUNE 21. 18W It has been discovered that all the elected presidents since Lincoln have worn full b sards. The singular spectacle of British troops protecting Parnell men from Orange rioters was witnessed in Newry June 8th. The Chinese ambassadorship to France has been abolished, and the treaty of peace with France is con demned by the Mongolians. A steamer line from Gottenberg the second city of commercial im portance in Sweden is the latest de velopment of Boston's commerce. The trades' council of London, Eng., has communicated with the labor organizers of the United States on the subject of international union. It is stated that when the queen of Madagascar died her loyal subjects wore no clothes for a period of thirty days. This is a very cheap way to go into mourning, but there are ob jections to it "With a population in 1880 of 1,G00,000, Texas -polled 240,000 votes. Her 2,000,000 inhabitants, if the same proportion of them vote this year, will poll 300,000 votes. 9 ...... Dceiko the first five months of the present year 910 miles of .railroad track have been laid in the United States. During the same period fifteen roads have been placed in the hands of receivers. A tuekc-masted, schooner-rigged wooden steamer, named the Al7ci, has been comploted by the Goss Marine IronAVorks, Bath, Maine, for the Ore gon Southern Improvement Company to ply between Coos Bay and Sun Francisco. Mia. Scovidlb, the sister of Guit eau, is at "Washington, Penn., selling piottires, as she states, for the pur pose of raising money with which to prosecute those who were instru mental in the hanging of her brother. She goes under a fictitious name. The Troy Times of a late date says that the name of ex-Senator Conkling was presented for membership to the Manhattan club three weeks ago The Manhattan is the leading Demo cratic club of New York. Another eastern paper says he was elected without one blaok ball being cast Thhbb are various ways of cooking crow, but only an expert knows how to make it ho palatable that it can be swallowed without a rye face. It may be boiled, broiled, stewed, fried, steauie grilled, stuffed, fricaased, -devilled, braudered und baked, and yet none of these wn-yB may serve to disguise the taste. As many dyspeptic Republicans in New York will be rec ommended this summer by their phy sicians to live on crow, there will be a great demand for accomplished cooks. Perhaps tho safest plan for the invalids will be to bolt their crow raw with a little salt The residuary legatees of Uncle Sammy are legion. Such a pricking up of ears never was seen as followed the publication of his letter. Candi dates who had buried their little booms with silent tears immediately began digging them up again. If the Sage of Greystone was henceforth to lie tucked away in his political sar cophagus it was resurrection day all along the line. Cleveland hung out his flags. Senator Bayard smiled like a terrapin in a stew. McDonald hoisted the hickory Hoosier handker chief. Payne is laying pipe. Ben Butler is unbottling himself. Flower is coming down from where the wood bine twineth and Sam Bandall has slapped "Pig-Iron" Kelley on the back. They will make it lively until the 8th of next month. The wife of Senator Harrison of Indiana, has decorated a set of china dinner plates in a novel and original manner. On each she has painted a bird of a different species, and on the border of the plate a verse written by one of the best poets on that particu lar kind of bird. "What tho country now needs is a campaign set of china, appropriately decorated. Four of the plates could bear the portraits of the Republican and Democratic can didates for the presidency and vice presidency respectively, while on the rest of tho set tho pictures of those who yearn for the office might appear. On the border of each of these plates a verse setting forth the merits of the individuals represented should be in scribed. After the campaign is over the .entire set, which would probably oonsist of several thousand pieces, could be sold at auction and the pro ceeds devoted to a Salt Creek sink ing fund for the disappointed of next November.
