CD "--A tmm VOL. XXI, ISO. 52. ASTORIA, OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE G, 1884. PRICE, FIVE CENTS. EXOS RASCALITY. Drawing a Check for 890,000 After Con fessing to an Embezzlement of 84,500,000. The Boston Transcript says: "We are permitted to quote tie following from a private letter received in this. city from New York, which throws considerable light on the inside his tory of young Eno's knavery in the management of the affairs of the Sec ond national bank: Young Eno saw that he had wrecked the bank, and made a clean breast of the matter to his father on Sunday. The shock to the old man was a ter rible one and his anger knew no bounds. He consulted with several of the directors, and they examined the securities in and the books of the bank, and found that the president had sunk 3,000,000 of the bank's as sets in Wall street Nor was this alL He had made way, likewise, with a million and a half in securities de posited in the bank by his brothers and sisters and even his little nephews andniece3l Amo3 E. Eno, when ho discovered these facts on Monday and Tuesday, was completely overcome by the "baseness of his son's crime, and from the first was for having him arrested and punished as severely as the law would permit. It was all the other directors, could do to divert his mind to the bank itself. They pleaded with him not to allow the bank to be closed, because of the suffering that would be caused to the hundred of depositors. Finally his anger toward his rascal of a son gave way to pity for those who had trusted the offioers of the bank, and ho consented to make good a porlion of tho sura his son had embezzled. His first offer was $1,600,000, but this was not enough, and again he doclared that he would see his son in prison before he would pay any more. But tho arguments of the directors prevailed, and he contributed out of i lie savings of a long and busy life enough money with the few hundreds of thousands which the other directors supplied, to cover the -deficiency and make the bank solvent. Well, the bank on Wednesday morn ing was declared solvent, and tho work of paying frightened depositors began. Mr. Eno, Sr., and one or two of the directors wojo in tho bank, and they thought that their troubles were in a measure over, when another dramatic incident occurred, and for a time the fate of the bank hung again in tho balance. This was noth ing more nor less than a check for S9U.O00, which John B. Eno had drawn on the bank, and which ho had got cashed down town, after he had confessed to an embezzlement of 34,500,000 to his father This was the climar of impudence, knavery and hard-heartedness. Think of this young scoundrel getting such a check oashed, and through the clearing house knowing that his father would have to pay it, or allow tho bank to dignation was such that ho declared that he would not pay a cent; this last stab from his son, he said, was more than he could bear. But one of '-the directors of the bank offered to share the amount evenly with him, and after a time ho agreed to tho pro position. One can hardly conceive of a more despicable act than this of young Eno's drawing on a bank of which he was the president, but in which he had no funds, and after he had confessed to an embezzlement of $4,500,000! It Amos K. Eno had had his own way, he would havo lot tho bank close its doors and would havo sent his son to Sing Sing; and he do serves all praise for allowing the in terests of the depositors to outweigh kis personal feelings in the matter, and for his unexampled generosity in protecting those who, knowing that nis integrity was beyond question, supposed that tho stock had not de generated in his son." The telegraph announces that Eno has fled to Europe. . . Chairman Hendeisoa's Speech. Following is the speech of General Henderson of Missouri, permanent chairman of the national Republican convention, at Chicago, last Wednes day: Gentlemen of the Conventien: We havo assembled to survey the past history of the party; to rejoice, as we may, because of the good it has done; to correct errors, if errors there be: to discover if possible the wants "of the present, and with patriotic firmness to provide for the future Our past history is the "Union pre served, slavery abolished, and its for mer victims equally and honorably pladed by our sides in this conven tion; the public faith maintained, un bounded credit at home and abroad, a currency convertible into coin, and the pulses of industry throbbing with renewed health and vigor in every section of a prosperous and peaceful country. The36 are the fruits of tri umphs over adverse policios, gained in the military and civil conflicts of the last twenty-four years. Out of these conflicts havo come a race of heroes and statesmen, challenging confidence and love at home, and re speot and admiration abroad. And now, when we come to select a stand ard bearer for the approaching con flict, our chief embarrassment is not in the abundance of presidential ma terials. New York has her true statesman, ! upon whoso administration the fierce nd even unfriendly light of public scrutiny has been turned, and tho universal verdiot is, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Vermont as her great statesman, whose record is as clear as the crystal springs of his native state, and whose virtuo is as firm as its granite hills. Ohio can come with a name whoso history is iof the Republican party itself. Bli jrois can come with one who never failed ia the discharge of a publio duty, whether in the council chamber or on the field of battle. Maine has her renowned favorite, whose splen did abilities and personal qualities have endeared "him to the hearts of friend, and the brilliancy of whose MoitaS .challenges the admiration of all, Connecticut and Indiana may come with names scarcely less illus trious than these. And now in con clusion, if because of personal dis agreements or the emergencies of the occasion, another name is sought, there yet remains that grand old hero of Atlanta. "When patriotism calls he cannot, if. he would, be silent, but grasping that banner, to him so dear, which lie has already borne in tri umph, ho will march to a civic victory no less renowned than those of war. I thank you, gentlemen, for this dis tinguished maik of your confidence. The allusions to Arthur, Sherman, Edmunds, Logan were heartily ap plauded, but when Blaine was al luded to as a man whoso splendid abilities and personal qualities had endeared him to the hearts of his friends, and whose brilliancy chal lenged the admiration of mankind, a storm of applause broke out, and on the stage, tho floor, and the galleries men stood up, and waving their hats and handkerchiefs cheered again and again. Women also took part in the demonstration, and waved their fano and handkerchiefs. After tho first stormy applause had worn itself out it was renewed, and once again, ana the enthusiasm was as marked and intense as that which characterized the convention of 18S0, at tho time of Garfield's nomination. It was fully five minutes before tho chairman was able to resume and finish his speech. Tildcn will Positively Dccllno the Nom ination. Washington, June 4. An impor tant fact has been disclosed here to day, on the best of authority, that Samuel J. Tilden will soon publish a letter declaring that he is not acan didalo for tho Democratic presiden tial nomination, and forbidding tho use of his name at the July conven tion. It is stated that some days since Dorshoimer, congressman for New York, wroto to Charles A. Dana, editor of tho New York Sun, urging him to call upon Tilden, and ascer tain positively what ho intended to do with regard to the question of nominating him for president Dor sheimer wrote that the Democratic party was actually suffering because of the uncertainty as to Tilden's in tentions; that it" was all befogged, doing nothing at a time when action was necessary, and all because no body knew whether or not Tilden would run. In the interest of the party Dorshoimer begged Dana to go to Tilden, show him the bad effect of the present uncertainty, and urge him to declare himself. Last Friday Dorsheimer went to New York and saw Dana. The latter reported that he had visited Tilden and submitted to him all tho arguments presented in Dorsheimer's letter. After listen ing patiently, Tilden replied that ho had not wavered an instant in his purpose to forbid tho use of his name. A LETTER WKITTEN. He Ihen showed to Dana a letter written by himself, in which, in terms most positive, emphatic and unequiv ocal, he not only refused tho use of his name, but declares that he would not accept the nomination if tender ed him, and that ho would not bo a candidate under anv circumstances. "I wrote this lettor," said Tilden to Dana, "two months since, with the intention of making it public then, but they persnaded mo to withhold it for a time, and I shall now have it read at the state Democratic conven tion on the 18th of June." In saying "they," Tilden no doubt referred to Bigelow, Manning and several other Democratic politicians who hold very closo relations with him. Ho said "they" had some purposes to sub serve which would havo been injured by the immediate publication of tho letter, and as he personally did not care for a little delay ho consented to withhold it until tho meeting of tho state convention. Dana assured Dor sheimer that ho baw and read Tilden's letter, and that there is no question of Tilden's sincerity; that he is not and will not be a candidate under any considerations. This news has completely upset tho Demoorats in congress. The Oregon Hore Win. New York, June 4 Jerome park races: free handicap, sweepstakes, all asjes, mile Won by the Oregon horse Jim Ken wick. Jim let the other horses do the running to the threo-quarter post, when he began to move. As they entered the straight the rider used the whip on Rica, and Donahue, who held Eenwick under a strong pull, gave his horse his head, and he drew away easily, winning by two lengths, Bica second, Euclid third.
