Total 20o The same beins one delegate at large from each coanty, and one delegate for every 125 votes, and one for every frac tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon. M. 0. George, congressman, at the last general election. The committee recommend that the primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th of April, and the county conventions on Tuasday, the 22d day of April, unless otherwise ordered by the proper county central committees. The committee earnestly recommend that the delegates elected to the state convention attend in person, and if not convenient for them to so attend person ally, that they send their proxies by electors of the count they represent. The Republican voters of tho state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of "the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican state convention. SOL. HmsrH, Chairman. rortlaud, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1SL THL' DEMOCIUT1C STATK CO.VKXTIOX. Tho state Democratic convention is hereby called to mefat at Dalle.s City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, tliree presi dential electors, representative in tho lower house of congress and district officers for the several judicial districts, and to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally ,to to do such other bnsinos as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an eleetion of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for tho assembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration of the body politic. The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the presidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, we shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this 6ud it is imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and heirty co-operation, not only in the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. We do not presume to trespasa upon the precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to unite in har monious action in the various primaries ana to send fall delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in the hope of seour iug the personal attendance of those to be chosen. "We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout tho state. Believing that the sucoess of the De niocracv is the welfare of the oeoDle. we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of public "affairs to unite with us. Wncir, Precinot Committee. Astoria, Or., April 4, 1884. House to Let. JNQUIRE AT STOKE & DAVIDSON'S. CATARRH Vrt I ft Hill I An rn-Amprican Movement. It begins to look quite probable thnt the republicans will nominate Secretary of War Lincoln to the vice presidency. In case it has not proved a misfortune to be the sou of a fam ous father. It is only because of bis father that we know " any thing about him. If his name bad not beeu -Lincoln, Mr. Garfield would never, have drcjuncd of lifting bim out of obscur ity. If his name were not Lincolu nobody would think of mentioning him in connection with tho vice pres idency. Mr. Lincoln appears to be nothing more than a respectable, commonplace man. If be has any talents be has never displayed them. The politicians who are pushing this mediocre person as a candidate for the second highest office in the republic do not hesitate to admit that his "a va nihility" consists of his son ship, and nothing else. They make no pretensions that he has any per sonal qualifications 'which mark him as a citizen worthy of .distinction. It can bo said in his favor that nobody can say anything against him; but this negative merit is possessed by every obsonre and reputable man in the country. The "Lincoln movement" is essentially nn-Americau. Birth ought to count for nothing in a re public: yet here is ono of the great political parlies putting a man for ward whose only claim upon tho suf frages of the people is his birth. The Ioverty of ideas in current politics is illustrated in a very marked way by this attempt to "boom" a very ordi nary young man, who represents noth ing, but who happens to be the off spring of a great man whoso memory is revered by his grateful country men. It would be a poor way of showing appreciation of Abraham Lincoln's services to the cause of lib erty to use his -name for the over throw of the good republican princi ple that as a man's birth is a thing beyond his power to control, it should count neither for nor against him when his fitness for public service is estimated. If Mr. Lincoln runs for the vice-presidency on the platform of his birth, every good American citizen ought to vote against him. Wo want no hereditary aristocracy here. A story entitled "A Bad Turn," and to the following effect, is going the reunds: A clergyman was devoutly reading the holy scriptures to his congregation, when ho came to a cer tain word in the lower right hand cor ner to wnich he desired to give great emphasis. So he read with a loud voice, 4,I am" turned over two leaves and continued "an ass, the foal of an ass" then, seeeing his mistake, found the right place, and added "that I am," which, of course, nobody would deny. This is a very good story -to spoiL The man who tells it didn't know his Bible. The phrase "I am that I am" is in Exodus; the phrase "an ass, the foal of an ass," is in the last of the Old Testament and the first of the New. So that, in or der to mix tho two sentences in the way described, the clergyman would have to turn, not two, but severaLhun dred leaves. In view of this thick ness, the story is altogether too thin. Mre.sTS. Skvbckv A Jouxsox, Gentlemen: Like most of my profession, I am cautious about pinning my fai h to any new medicino or curative agent. But your BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER, has broken through the barriers and won its way to my good opinion. My attention was first called to it some eight months ago by a patient of mino Although 1 was well ac quainted with tho superior excellence of your other plaster and antiseptic dressing, made especially for tho profession, the Benson's was comparatively now to mo. I had heard, however, of itsmoritsas a romedy, in cases of Lnmo Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of the Bronchial Tube3 and Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and tho like affection?, and havo since begun to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTKRan exceptionally clean ly plaster to uso. and rapid in its action. Many tests of-its qualitios, mede in my own family and among my patients havo convinc ed mo that there i3 no single article so valu nblo for popular uso, nor so helpful in tho diseases I have named. Should you desire to do so,, you may ue my name to that effect. Very truly yours, . !I.II.KANE,A.M..M,D. The genuine havo the word CAPCINE cut in the center. Prico 25 cents.
