-- 5'j-t cza She gailtj gStftovuuu ASTORIA, OKEGON: THURSDAY MAKCH 13, 1851 GsNERAit Butleb does not seem to be able to get bis oar in anywhere. Minister Sakgent seems to be too good an American to suit tbe German cbancellor. Mr. Arthur does not seem to be in tbe least worried about the Blaine boom, ilpoor thing!' There is no way in which Mr. Bis marck can dodge the pork problem. It is root, hog, or die. m m The two political parties should not worry themselves about platforms. What they want is votes. The Chreat Eastern has become a coal hulk at Gibraltar. Her fate is as sad as that of some politicians. The Bepublicans have carried Lex ington, Ky. The Democrats must have been all on a religious picnic. Boston has started a new party on a foundation of civil service reform and anti-silver. It is to sweet to live long. Among the fishes most commonly eaten, the cod is the poorest in total solid matter, in albuminous com pounds, and in fat. SntTr-FOUR counties in Texas did not vote at the last presidential elec tion. Many of them have since been organized, and will be heard from this year. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer thinks that if the Northern Pacific grant is forfeited, it will bankrupt the whole concern. Of two evils choose the least A Memphis judge bath decided that a man 13 drunk when he doesn't know what he is thinking about" W-h-e-e-w I That would sometimes scoop in the entire gang. Deacok Parkxn'sok, whilom of Ne Tada, but now ruuuing a newspaper in Port Townsend. has got a little crossways on woman suffrage and the liquor question. The deacon has the strong side of the question, however, aud will eventually demonstrate his position. Speaker Cablxsle has received a letter addressed to him personally by several of the most prominent mem bers of the Liberal party in the Ger man reichstag, expressing their ap preciation of the action taken by the house of representatives in memory Herr Lasker. The New York Sun says: 4It seems to be generally believed that two things are settled in regard to the next presidential election. One is that no candidate will succeed unless he oan carry the slate of New York. The other is that tariff will be forced into the contest and be among the leading issues of the campaign." The construction of telegraph lines is not so expensive an undertaking as many people suppose. It has been testified before a committee of the United States senate that the cost to the Western Union company has not been more than $75 a mile for a single wire line with cedar posts, and not more than $105 for a two-wire line. It is threatened that in some coun ties of the state that should the mort tage tax law be declared unconsti tutional by the supreme court that another one will be framed and passed next winter that will stand judicial interpretation, which exhibits how tome people are unable to get an idea out of their heads when it has once struck' firm root therein. The Berlin papers intimate that this government must recall Minister Sargent unless it wishes further em barrassment. This government can almost afford to do anything than re call Mr. Sargent at this time. If an old man like Bismarck thinks in his dotage that he can reach across 3,000 miles of sea and dictate the policy of government whose directors never grow old, he is everlastingly mis taken. Senator Hale, how are those new steel cruisers getting on? The gentlemen who expect to be delegates to the Democratic and Ke publican conventions in Chicago will do well to save up their money. In anticipation of the rush of the patri ots to that city in June and July, the hotel keepers have already advanced their prices and it looks as if even standing room in the famous hostel ries of the Garden city will be a dol lar a minute before the nominations are made. Chicago is right She has cornered the conventions and it would be contrary to all rules of the trefit not to squeeze them. We can see no impropriety in an editor, if he feels disposed to seek a pass, according to custom over a road, and if the officials see fit to grant this, neither thesaid officials, nor any contemporary press have nny moral right to use thia fact against such editor. Lewiston Teller. Does the railroad give an editor a pass because of the distinguished con sideration it has for the editor as an individ uaZ,because it desires to testify to the friendship they bear him as an individual, or is it because they nat urally expect some return in kind? A moment's reflection will show our oandid but mistaken contemporary that he is in error. ROR. On Ynungb river. March 11, ISM, to the -wife of 17. Hassel, aon. NEW TO-DAY.
