C2J tthc 3aU'u Slistorfatt. A5T0KIA, OREGON: SATURDAY FEBRUARY 16, 181 THE VALUE OF A REPUTATION IN BUSINESS. The importance of making a busi ness reputation and maintaining it when established is well represented in the case of canned goods in the countries of the east For some years canned meats and fruits, bottled pre serves, olives, pickles, etc.. prepared in this country, had secured a good name and a resulting large sale. The quality was of the best, the methods of packing aud preserving as good as could be devised, and the price bo reasonable that they soon made a market for themselves. A recent report from Consul Gen eral Yan Euren at Yokohama is but a repetition of the old, old story of de terioration, the consequent loss of reputation and falling off of trade. In 1881 these troods had -secured a large sale in Japan. They were the best of their kind in every branch. In 1832 their sale bad increased -at a quite uniform rate of .about twenty five per cent in a single year. In -1833- --the effect of adulterated alid badly packed goods be gan to be apparent 'as the trade fell off until it was much smaller even than in 188L It had been found on examination that what purported to be fruit jelly sent from this country was chiefly gelatine with a flavoring essence. The same dete rioration was evident in canned meats and fruits, and especially in butter. Such tendencies as 'these are so absolutely fatal to our foreign trade that many of our products are shipped to England or France, where they are worked over, repacked, stamped by reputable dealers and shipped into the Eastern countries as European products. The people of those countries recognize the import ance of a name and reputation in business. They do not expect to transact all the business or make all the profits in a single year, and the soo'ner 'our people learn the same thing the sooner they will secure rep utation and the resulting business profit. It is related as a bit of news about Mr. Becher that he delights in dia monds, opals, amethysts and all sorts of gems. He can, he says, pass hours gazing into the flashing depths of a brilliant or watching the play of love ly color in an opal Now, let not the captious and irreverent be too hasty in calling the great preacher a world ling. What of inanimate nature has more beauty in smaller compass than a diamond? Its high price alone points to the dlevation of sentiment it inspires. That it isonly the more beautiful on a taper finger, in a deli cate pinkish ear or strung in a river of light about a soft white throat is surely not to be spoken to its 'disad vantage. One thing is certain, if Mr. Eeecher, like Shakespere, finds his ''sermons in stones, and good in everything," dozens of congrega tions will immediately supply their preachers with a set of the finest jewels that money can buy. May Mr. Beecher never want a diamond! One-third of the session of con gress has been permitted to pass aud the work of that body is chiefly pros pective so far. There was a great flourish of trumpets at first about What was going to be done, but noth ing really is done yet, and the rate at which work is progressing doesn't give much hope that the really im portant measures are to be pushed to final passage. The currency and silver questions should not be allowed to go over another session without some radical legislation, and the ship ping interests of the country should be given the benefit of the most care ful attention from the national law makers. Mere political questions can well be remitted to the people, who will have to decide on them at' tho polls, but congress should do some real legislative work and that promptly. - Of all the prophecies of the end of the world the safest and slowest is the one made recently by the' ghost of Mohammed, at Mecca, which puts down this event for a date of 140 years hence. To people accustomed to the short time allowances on this subject of a Miller, this prediction of the spirit of Mohammed will be bosh; yet some Mohammedans are excited about it A plague and & cyclone are, to. bathe forerunners of the end; and if Egypt will furnish the plague, .America can easily produce the cy clone. He always has a poker hand,' too, or the.peraoas playing'with I him think he has, and he derives a large income from the game They say of him out in' Denver that when he wanted four jfteks once at poker, and had but three, he quietly dropped his fourth card and substituted his 'pho tograph.
