The New York Sun thus de scribes the arrival of the Oregon pioneers in that city: "A party of ruddy-faced buxum women, robust girls, and blooming babies arrived in Jersey City on a special train over the Pennsylvania Railroad last evening. The men wore broad-brimmed, soft hats and erc iwuuu uuwu wiiii luirirniiii. xneir wives all carried satchels or babies. The men said they werf. Oregon pioneers who settled in the Web- fool state prior to 1S54. They InftTf come here with their families to have a good time, and would re turn to tho West in a month or so. Their parly was known as the Ore gon Association, and was 500 strong when it left Portland, Octo ber od, but desertions at Chicago and other points of interest, re duced it to 117. The orjranization numbers several thousand, and has for its object the promotion of fel lowship among early settlers. Of its members, two-thirds are farm ers, and the rest are storekeepers, lawyers and doctors."' Lord Chief .fustic." Coleridge, who has recently been on a visit to this country as a guest of the New York T3r Association, has done some rude things that has subjected him to just criticism. At the same time, his many utter ances oi appreciation of America ami American institutions, will ever make his name honored by Americans. Tn one of his speeches, in speaking of our boast ed wealth, he said: It is not your great fortunes that have attracted me here. There are fortunes almost as irreat in England as hero. Millions of gold sovereigns or millions of golden dollars are alike confusion to me and do not interest me. But it seems lo me that Americans crown ing glory is that it is a country of homes. The solid content and satisfaction bred by the fact that the farmers lauds are his own, the merchant and the professional man generally own their own houses and the cottage of the artisan be longs to him. England and America are absolutely irresist able in the world. Upon another occasion he said: You have paid a price not paid by any other nation in vour great struggle for tho preservation of the Union. Jt has shown you to be a nation nobly, grandly, indis putably great. Such sentiments, failing from the lips of England's chief justice, are in striking and refreshing con trast with the utterances of the supercilious snobs who come here determined to see only something to condemn.
