Tho magnificent building of the Pittsburg Exposition society, on the north bank of the Alleghany river, has been totally destroyed. The immense structures, with their almost endless variety of ex hibits, illustrative of every branch of art, science and mechanical skill which have been visited by thou sands of people, since the opening, September 0, is now :t mass of splint wood and powdered embers and tangled iron. The destruc tion is complete. Fira was first ! discovered in the boiler-room at tached to machinery lixil, at the south end of the builtiititr, and be fore the watchman ci uhS irn :tn alarm the flames had spreml toj floral hall, machinery hsi and ihi'i main buildings, and in less than j ten minutes the buildings were 0:1 j fire from end to end, and when the fire department arrived on the grounds the flames were beyond control. Nothing could be saved and the firemen turned their at tention to saving adjacent proper ty, many residences on South ave nue being in flames, they succeed ed in saving all of these, with no more damage done than burning fences and cornices. Repeated alarms soon aroused :iinioi-.t the entire population of the two cities, and it is estimated that not less than 75,000 to 100,000 people witnessed the conflagration. The reflection of the flames illuminated the country for miles around, makins: possible reading of the finest newspaper print. A Philadelphia dispatch of the 3d says: In the trial of Captain Barker, on a charge of throwing his vessel, the Mary J). Lmch. upon a reef and losing her, mate Crosswell O. Smith testified that when the vessel left Old Provi dence reef she could not have been seen from the harbor, but in going out broken water was seen. Captain Barker gave Smith or ders to take the ship, at the same time adding, "I want this to be the last tack the ship shall ever make." Smith to this made an swer, "Where are you going to put her?" to which the captain re plied. "On the reef." If con victed the crime entails the deatii penalty.
