in ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY... .SE1TEMIIKR 13, 18S3 Tlic Portland which has been loading at Wcstport came down yes terday and will finish at Knappton. The Columbia arrived in yester day: the State sailed for San Fran cisco. The Kairnshire started up stream. The next regular meting of the Presbytery of Oregon will convene in Calvary Church, Portland, Or., Mon day, October 1st. Beechcr's views on matters and things do not please the San Francisco papers. The Chronicle in cruel comment charges him with being "su perficial." The British ship E&hdalc, from Liverpool July 2filli, for the Columbia, was spokon on the 4th mst., in lati tude 43 deg. north, longitude 12 deg. west, partially dismasted. Among our visitors yesterday were Mr. Geo. Holland, the celebrated actor and leading comedian in the troupe that pla3s at Occidental Hall this evening, and T. Henderson Boyd, manager of the company. E. C. Clayton, a competent and practical draughsman, and a pon mau of more than ordinary skill, has secured office room at Bosorth & John's real estate rooms, and is ready for business. The performance at Occidental Hall this evening will be one of ster ling merit; considerable curiosity is excited to see Mr. Holland's imperso nation of the part that Sotliorn made famous "Lord Dundreary." A break in wheat charters is re ported from Sen Francisco. The BoJiemki,'A 3, GOO ton wooden ship, has been chartered for Liverpool at 45 shillings and the Pvonah, a 1,200 ton iron ship, for Cork at 52J shillings. C. H. Bain, long and favorably known in the sash and door business m this city, has renurchased his former mill property and advertises an extensive assortment of work which he manufactures in iho best style. Jtjs reported that the Southern Pacific .Railroad Company has con tracted to take 2,000 tons of wheat through to Livorpool from San Fran cisco, at eleven dollars a tou. The raio seems incredibly low, and if es tablished will send evory cental of California wheat trundling through Arizona. The fire alarm at one o'clock yesterday afternoon was caused by the issuing of a dense volume of smoke from a stable in the rear of Mr. Crosby's residence opposite Occidental Hall. Two streams of water were deluging it in a few minutes. The lire was occasioned by a couple of vagrant boys with cigarettes. It is estimated that this year Washington Territory will send abroad 335,000,000 feet of lumber, 200,000 cases of salmon, 5.000,000 bushels of wheat, 3,000,000 of oats, 100,000 bushels of potatoes, 200,000 tons of coal, 200,000 pounds of hops, aud 2,500,000 pounds of wool, be sides a large amount of fruit. Chas. A. Campbell and bride were among the passengers on the Columbia j'esterday mcrning. Mr Campbell was married on tho 5th, in Eureka, Humboldt Co.. Cal., and comes here to make his homo. Ho received the hearty congratulations of hi3 friends, and when the oldacquain tances at the Horton house and else where in San Diego, CaL, hear of his marriage ho will doubtless re ceive a shower of good wishes. It is particularly desired that sufficient number delay occupj'lng thoir seats this evening at the theatre till the first act is about half through, as it adds so materially to the comfort of tho audience aud the ability of the performers. If those who usually vary tno periormanco in tno rear would bring along a couple of tin pans and a bunch of fire crackers it would also vary the monotony and could bo no less objectionable than tho yells and whistles which form the accustomed prelude to the play. If the Portland telegraphic agent of the San Francisco press has no sense he should consult some one up there who is not wholly devoid of jus tice. Under date of the 8th he sent a dispatch to San Francisco concerning the C. D. Bryant, conveying tho idea that ntjho time that vessel struck she had a pilot on board, when everyono knows she had not, and that it was not until she had been on the sands three hours that pilot Olsen went on board. That precious bit of "news" is from the same sourco that caused a dispatch to bo sent from Portland on July 10th, saying that all was fear and trembling at Astoria and that 300 men were marching from upper town to burn the city. House "Wanted For a small family. Address " tlii omce. - The First Shipment Of Boots and Shoes from eastern manu factories to Astoria, via the Northern Pacific, will arrive tins week, for I. J AlTOltt. A Young Traveler. When the Columbia left hero on her last San Francisco trip she carried away a lone passenger of an unusually tender age. While lying at the dock, the littlo four-year-old eon of P. Foley iu some way managed to get on board, and not till the steamer was half way to the bar was he discovered. The stewardess' took charge of tho little fellow whose chief concern was the fact that he had no hat, and it is not probable that any of the Colum bia's passengers enjoyed the trip more thoroughly than he. The second day out the passengers made up a purse f 30, and when the steamer arrived San Francisco the money was handed the steward in whose care the little fellow was left with injunctions to get him a nice suit of clothes. Yesterday morning whun the Colum bia fired her gun. the young travoler was on deck, and on being restored to his anxious parents he composedly began an .account of his 1,000 mile trip to the metropolis, and displayed sundry gifts from the kind officers who took tho utmost care of him. The young man made himself at home in San Francisco. The Call says: "Harbor policemen Ciiulon aud Dil lon went to the steamer Columbia yesterday upon her arrival from Ore gon, and took possession of a four- year-old boy named Arthur T. Foley, who went aboard tho steamer at As toria. Ho was not discovered till out to sea, when the stcwarduss took him in charge. The distracted parents telegraphed to this city for tho police to look out for him, some one in As toria having scon tho bof aboard the vessel. The little fellovr is bright, and independence can bo seou iu his every action. Clinton took him to the Chief's office, where he made himself at homo bv rummaging over tho pri- atc papers, spilling ink on a promi nent detective's pantaloons, aud pass ing remarks about things in general. The Chief, being unable tt stand it longer, ordered the biy taken out. Clinton, taking a fancy to the young ster, took him to his own homo. On tho cars he proposod to go on the platform, whore he could see tho town, and not gaining permission to do so he holped himself to a handful of the officer's flowing beard. The cars going without horses" greatly interested and mystified the small Webfootcr, and so great was his de bt with street-car riding that he could with difficulty be induced to get off. Arriving at the house, the boy immediately took possession, and when Clinton left, he was out in the ard riding the officer's billy goat, under the boy's arm was a pet hon, and his voice could be heard for a distance of four blocks. The little follow is unconcerned, and has no de sire to go home. He will be sent back by the next steamer." At a meeting of the committee on finance and committee of arrango meuts at the rooms of the chamber of commerce last evening, in reference to the reception of the visitors to-day, both committees made satisfactory reports. The uncertainty as to the arrival of the visitors mado final action on the part of tho committees somewhat indefinite. It was however decided that there bo two reception committoos, the one to consist of the chamber of commerce as a body, with Prest Bowlby as spokes man, the other, consisting of Messrs. Case, Berry, Elmore, Halloran and Kinnev to go on the Gov. Nswoll to meet tho vis itors previous to their arrival should they come. It is probable that the programme which included two visits to Astoria will bo carried out, but it was impossible to secure telegraphic communication with Portland last evening. If vou feel dull, drowsy, debili tated. liavo sallow color ot sKin, or yollowish-brown spots on face or body, frequent headache or dizziness, bad taste in mouth, internal heat or chills alternated with hot flushes, low spirits and gloomy forebodings, irregular ap petite, and tongue coated, you are suffering from "torpid liver, or "bit lousness. At tho last meeting of tho city council Tuesday evening, a petition from citizens asking for a street lamp corner Squemoqua aud Washington sts., was referred to street commit tee. A communication from J. G. Hust ler, asking extension of time to collect city taxe3, was filed. From C. H. Williamson in reference to city map, was referred. From Astoria street railway company accepting franchise and conditions of ordinance 2s o. 549, was nieu. vrom tne mayor ot the city vetoing an ordinance for closing certain houses at raid- night was filed. Tho committee on public property recommending erec tion of street lamp as requested by petition was read aud adopted. Re ports of police judge, street superin tendent, and soxtou, for August, were read and referred. An ordinauce requiring restaurants, bar rooms, etc., to close from mid night to 5 a. m., which had been ve toed by the mayor, was placed upon its passage, the veto being ayes, none; nays, Cooper, Carruthers, Johns and Trenchard, so the veto was declared sustained. An ordinance extending the time to collect taxes for 1883 to October 14. 1883, was passed under suspension of the rule3. An ordinance authorizing tho street committee to contract with the Asto ria gaslight company was read first and second times and referred. The reception of the last spike par at Portland last Tuesday, in point of numbers and display is said to bo unequaled in the history of the state. A grand stand had been erected upon which most of the distinguished visit ors were given seats whilo tho proces sion which was of great length filed by. At the close of this portion of the programma the literary exercises began at the pavilion which was dense ly crowded. Speeches of a most com plimentary nature were made and re- ponded to. The address of welcome was delivered by Congressman George. On the subject of tho improvement of the Columbia river bar, Ifr. George said: We need, however, increased facili ties down tho river to its mouth by water and by rail; and the permanent improvement of the bar of the Col umbia 13 of transcendent importance. Xearly all of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and countries en gaged in through international travel and traffic are directly interested. Its capacity for extensive and lasting im provement is greater than that of Sandy Hook, the Delaware or the Imssissippi. While at tho entrance of tho Golden Gate there is much deeper water over its bar than at any great commercial city of the eastern states in fact more than at most of the lead ing commercial cities of the world namely, thirty-four feet at high tide yot tho Columbia, whenever her two channels shift into one, exceeds oven that magnificent depth. The van couver chart of 1791 shows one chan nel and nearly thirty-five feet over tho bar, and tho chart of 1841 nearly thirty-four foet, tho intermediate charts showing two channels, and of course only depths approximating present soundings. JLho depth of water on tho bar has been exceptionally good m the past, and can be easily mado so again. Wo arc on the dividing line between in land and ocean and although we are destined through the completion of your wonderful railroad system to be come a great railway center, yet the importance of our water ways cannot bo forgotten. At tho close of the speech making which extended till fivo o'clock ther,e was an intermission to enable tho re ception committeo to take tho guests around tho city and in tho ovening : concert was given at tho Pavilion There wero no accidents, and the newspapers report everything has having passed off pleasantly and sua ccssfully. The foreign guests, com prising a large delegation, will leave Portland on the Wide West and TJiompson at nine o'clock this morning on a visit to Astoria, and will probably get here about half-past three this afternoon. Everything has been fit ted up in first-class style, and his well known reputation as a caterer assures all who like good things to eat, that at his place they can be accommodated. Sweetly Scented. The fall fishing opened with one of the disgustingly disagreeable features which have become familiar as con nected with attempts to can Sacramento-river fish in this city any time from two days to two weeks after they are taken from the water. Tho steamer Stockton came in from tho river on Tuesday with 8,000 salmon aboard. Of this amount about 5,000 were found to be so rotten as to make their removal from the wharf about as pleasant an experience as a midsummer inspection of a glue factory.' Wo are informed that the stench was a most snperb affair, and we took it for granted, not caring to boast of a more intimate acquaintance. They were left upon the wharf to con test the palm with the various other odors so abundant there, until the market inspector and the wharfinger threw up tho spongo and ordered them off. When a wharfinger throws up his hands it is time to stop taking testimony. The3j fiah were after wards seen on their way down tho bay, driving a column of sewer gas be fore them. We know of at least one packer who will regret not having been able to put them up and label them Columbia packed. These tish are said to have been taken at least a week before the season opened. This 13 the usual thing patrol or no pa trol. The strife is to have them iu tho market on tho Grst day when prices are high. The ruh opened good, though not so largo as last year. It has fallen off considerably, and is now not so large. Sacramento fall pack is quotable at $L051.12 f. o. b. cars, but no sales are reported at these fig ures. CaL Grocer and Conner.
