a) ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY. ...SEITEMRER 7. 16S3 Another Warniu: The embezzlements and final exposure of Fitch, cashier of a Warren, Ohio, bank, furnishes an other warning to j'oung men eager to acquire sudden wealth. He was a young man, trusted, honored and esteemed. But he became a prey to that insatiate monster Speculation, and into its capacious and never satisfied maw poured not only his own earnings, but 80,000,000 of the funds in trusted to his keeping. Exposure came, as it is almost sure to do in every such instance, destroying his good name, blighting his pros pects for the future, bring dis grace upon his family, and well nigh ruining the stockholders of the institution that had given him its unlimited confidence. He had a good home, a liberal salary,- and sufficient of this world's goods for the full enjoyment of all the com forts of life; but above all he had a good name. To-day he is a dis guised fugitive from justice, with the condemnations of the law hanging over him, and the curses and denunciations of tiiose whom he has wronged following him. Tt is the same old story, repeated year after year, and almost month after month. Fitch was perhaps as honest as the average of busi ness men. At least he enjoyed that reputation. He undoubtedly went into stock speculation with no intention of wronjrinjr his family or his friends. But he lost, and went deeper, lured by the de lusive hope of recovering what had already been sunk, and at the same time making the coveted gain. Again he wont in, using the money of the bank and its de positors, and again he lost, and so on, until, within ten months eighty thousand dollars had been embez zled and swallowed up. While it is to be hoped that the lesson taught by Fitch's experi ence may be heeded as it should be by others tempted as he was, there is no reason to fear that it will not be, at least by some who read it. The financial historv of the country is crowded with such examples, yet they seem to multi ply rather than 'decrease. Specu lation is a sort of tfjfisjittuu, the mania for which is as irresistible as a contagion, and can only be repelled by the most rigid adher ence to the strict rules of moral and financial health. The lonsrinir for and the mad ofibrt to obtain wealth without the return of an equivalent in labor and manly ef fort has ruined thousands of good men. It has ruined and forever disgraced that man. It will do the same for four out of every five who thus undertake to gratify their greed. It is a violation of natur al and financial laws which is al most certain to bring a correspond ing penalty. There is but one safe course, and that is in the line of stswt integrity, unswerving fidelity, and untiring industry. Those, with proper economy, are sure to bring success, and with it abiding peace of mind, which is better far than riches obtained at the risk of reputation and honor. What America Offers. A few months ago the XiOn'don Spectator inquired what the United States had ever done for other nations. "No nation in bonds," it said, "ever looks up to the great republic for aid; no struggling people turn to her fleet with longing; no perishing race so much as hopes that the western rifle will drive away the op pressor." In the course of reply to this the JWjp ITorJ: Nation said: "If there be one service more valuable than another which a republic like the United States can render to the world and to all races of the world, at this junction, it is the successful exhibition of a government with out standing armies, and of a so ciety which does not make pets of fighting men. This service the United Suites is now render ing. This is a speci tacle absolutely without prece dent. No nation with fifty mil lions has ever before presented it to the world, and there is in it more hope and help for the op pressed than in all the fleets or armies which now cover the waters or darken the land in any part of the world. No force that could be mus tered on these shores, and no fleets that we put to sea, could make the groaning nations ot Eufope diminish their armies by one company. But it is quite certain that before many years the steady offer of cheaper food than any heavily taxed people can raise, will make the maintenance of these enormous hosts unendurable." Ax Omaha dispatch says Paul Vandervoort, chief clerk of the railway service at Omaha, for nine years past, has been removed by Postmaster-General Gresham. Great indignation is expressed, as it is done on account of Mr. Vandervoort's absence from duty as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. Under the late Postmaster-General Howe, he had permission, and under Gresham only made one trip, and that with permission and without pay. He had no notice from the department until his suc cessor walked in. He has accom plished a great work for the serv ice and his removal is considered an outrage. A successful swindler is re ported working a new game. He travels, of course, and in each place he finds out a worth' object of charity a widow in destitute circumstances, if possible and then sets out to present her case to the residents.
