This transfers a problem to the jailor. Just how women can bo couQned in our county jail, deCcient as it is in every sanitary tegulation, does not appear. Without the slight est referenco to the judge's sentence, which we have neither the right nor the intention to speak of, it is cer tainly a hard matter to see how those girls are to be confined for a year or a montli in that jail. To those who have a half hour to spare it might not bo time wasted to take a look at the interior of that place and see the sights and smell the stinks. After pitching the tent and partak ing of a hearty meal, which all en joyed, we gathered around our camp fire and sang songs, some musical and some otherwise, and we also had some excellent recitations. It was probably one o'clock before any one had any sleep, and most say that there was so much noise that they got no sleep at all. Some of the gentlemen went on a fishing and hunting tour up the east branch of the Klaskanine. Thoy started about 4:30 x. u. The re mainder ot tho campers had breakfast about seven, and amused themselves in different ways until the arrival of those who could not go with them Tuesday. Some of the new arrivals (? ter, and deserves commendation for went up the river fishing, and one of his efforts to ameliorate the condition of tho unfortunates who are tempora rily detained. In tho evening those who went fishing and hunting returned with a good mess of trout, and six pheasants, at least that is what they called them. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of tho Odd Fellows' Land and Building Association, held last Thursday night tho present board of directors were re-elected, and a unanimous vote of thanks tendered them for the able manner in which they have handled the corporation's affairs. j one of them, Mollie Moran, attempted tho addition of a serenade at 1 x. M., to commit suicide bv taking a dose of a few voices were heard later, but by On the Wide West yesterday af ternoon went a case of Columbia River salmon packed by A. Booth & Co. It is just like any other of the six hundred and odd thousand that were taken from our great river this season but bears the distinction of be mg the first salmon that ever went eastward via the Northern Pacific Railroad from Astoria, as it will go in tho first train that leaves Portland toward tho rising sun. Those who went to tho theatre last night to see something picturesque were disappointed, for there was noth iag attractive about three tiers of pleasant looking young gentlemen playing upon guitars and mandolins, with the inevitable bass viol in the northwest corner, and a leader with a violin. But for pure melody and splendidly executed music, the troupe 1b & success And well deserved the large audience that their fame at tracted. The "Jtfiserere" from "II Trovatore" was of itself well worth the price of admission: seldom have we seen a better conducted orchestra. To-night they play in Portland. L05 of the Wlgtonahlre. Tho grand jury touched uponit very lightly; it needs ventilation in every sense of the word. Tho case of Hill vs Laujhrey is of interest as a test case. Sometime ago tho city council passed an 'ordinance rolative to tho closing of places of business at midnight. A few days ago George Hill was fined $10 in the police court for violation of ihe ordi nance. The matter was brought be- foro Judge Bennett for adjudication yesterday morning. The point at issue was not an appeal from the police court, but a test case in the right of jurisdiction on tho part of the city of Astoria to pass such an ordi nance. Judge Bennett decided that the city had that right, and that the ordinance was valid. The effect of the decision is to render the ordi nance operative and binuing upon that class in relation to whom the ordinance was passed. Hill poid his fine under protest, and, we under stand, will appeal the case to the supreme court. Westport XTotps. Westport, Aug. 22nd. En. Bad Practice. The Sacramento snriug pack has been cleared up. It is only reason able to suppose that packers on the Sacramento would be inclined to make a light pack during the coming fall season, owing to the present dull con dition of the market, aud its dim aud obscure future prospects. Such, how ever, will not be the case. On tho contrary, canners will pack all the fleh they can obtain, and the fall pack will be a large one, provided the run of fish will admit of it. 2 o'clock all was quiet. In the morning after tho usual per formanco around the breakfast table some of the ladies and gentlemen in dulged in a little target shooting. The first was with revolvers, at a dis tance of sixty feet. Miss Dickinson did the best shooting, hitting tho bull's eye once and putting several other shot3 within a few inches of it. The next was with a Ballard rifle at a distance of one hundred yards; Miss Dickinson making tho best shot; B. Van Dusen, second. At four o'clock we began packing up preparatory to returning home. . Mr. Gray kindly sent his team to haul our baggage to the landing. Tho campers met at Mr. Gray's and tendered him a vote of thanks for his kindness to ward us during our stay. Mr. Gray then went with us to the landing where the steamer Daisy and a largo fishing boat was in waiting for us. Some got on board the Daisy, but most of us took the fishing boat aud the steamer took us in tow. Wo left about six o'clock and after a pleasant ride arrived at tho wharf at 8 r. M. The lot of "off" salmon in question were of fall-catch Sacramento river, city packed. They wero shipped to Aus traiia in ibbz, ana wero returned as unsalable. This is all wrong. The do-over business is overdone, and the trade should have done with it. If there are fish of an undesirable or off quality why would it not be belter to sell them for what they would bring in open market rather than to take them into a cellar, strip off the old label and brine them out redecked with a gaudy label, which, however, it may temporarily deceive the public and sell the goods, eventually reacts after which they pack up their outfits and send them down to this city by the Oregon Bteamors. They -are then transferred to tho Sacramento in the innumerable sloughs of which they can hido their boats very easily. The canneries not being in operation they salt tho salmon, ana as soon as it has lost some of tho appearance of freshness it is sent down to Hub city, A number of fish dealing firms Washington Market are openly en gaged in the business of packing this salmon.
