Yesterday, a vessel's yards were
put to a novel use. Men at the wu-

Last Saturday evening, the ware-
house at the Forest Grove depot, was j
burned. The buildinor and machinery
coat $3200, and were insured in the
Phoenix and Home for S2000. Six
cars belonging to tho 0. & C. R. R.
Co. were lying on the side-track by
the warehouse and were all burned,
It is thought that the loss will include
onlv the wood work of the cars. The
origin of the fire is unknown.
Taxpayers who like to see how
their money is expended have an
excellent opportunity now to visit the
framework of the new school house
and see how well it is put together.

i An Interesting and Beautiful Cere
mony.
On the 28th of last September, the
comer stone of the Odd .bellows
Temple in this citr was laid vith ap
propriate ceremony, "and as da' by
day the stately structure grew beneath
the hands of the builders the question
was "when will it be fiuished, and
when dedicated?" The supposition
was that by the 2Gth of April, the
I anniversary of the foundation of
the order, the hall would be dedicated;
but owing to the scarcity of material
and lack of laborers the building was
not completed till the 1st of .June.
Delay occasioned by the non-arrival of;
furniture, carpets, etc., etc., also con
spired to put on the day, till fin;iily,thc
committee of arrangements decided on
Tuesday, August 14th, as Dedication
Day. To Ilwaco on the GVn. Miles, at
seven yesterday morning, went a
party of picnickers, and at nine, an-
other detachment; at half-past eleven,
immediately unon the arrival of the
Wide West from Portland, went a
third party, and joining at Ilwaco
those who went earlier in the day
had a season of pleasant diversion,
returning at half-past five in the
afternoon.
Cards of invitation had been issued
to the number or several hundred for
the evening ceremony, and by eight
o'clock the hall was filled to its ut
most limit, and was the theme of

by the Astoria Musical Society, and
the dedication prayer was offered,
when the society intoned "Bo Merci
ful," followed by the closing address
of the grand master. "Praise ye the
Lord." was sung, and as the last
strains of the exquisite melody died
away, G. C, E. C. Holden came for
ward and delivered an address which
though necessarily somewhat extern
pore, was characterized throughout by
thought and feeling. At its close
Mis3 Callio Munson came forward and
with a few graceful words of presenta
tiou on behalf of the daughters
of Rebekah, placed upon the altar a
ueautituuy bound Uible, which was
duly accepted in words of thankful
testimony by the grand master. The

the benediction pronounced, and the
exercises closed. The organ used was
kindly loaned by the 1L E. congrega
tion. When the lodge has its now
twelve hundred dollar organ, now on
the way from the east, it may bo abl
to reciprocate on some future occasion.
The dedication was most impressive
throughout and was, at once a source
of pleasure to those assembled and of
extreme gratification to the officers

The undersigned, your" grand jury j
for the August term, 1883, report as
follows:
That we have examined into all
charges brought before us and have
found indictments in such cases as
seemed to us proper.
We have visited the various county
offices and, so far as we were able to
judge, tho officers are properly per
forming their duties.
We have inspected the city jail and
find it iu a fair condition, but would
recommend that both jails be proper
Iv cleaned and the tal!s whitewashed.
We further recommend that the court-
t' court take proj.or means to provide
an adequate water supply for the
county jail. There is no water in the
building except such as is carried
there, and as a result it is in a filthy
condition. Very often innocent per
sons are confined thero as witnesses
and a proper regard to the rights of
such persons, as well as humanity to
those confined on account of crime,
imperatively demands that water
should be plentifully supplied and
more frequently used in the building
than it is at present.
The condition of the public roads is
as good as could be expected, consid
ering the nature of the country.
There arc but few county poor and
they aro well taken care of.
Having now completed our labors
wo respectfully ask to be discharged
for the term.

Last Friday the contractors on the
Crow creek tunnel on the Oregon &
California extension, reached daylight
near the center, and will have the
tunnel ready for the track layers in
about ten days. Tho perforation was
,800 feet, and is the longest tunnel
on the line, except the one at the
Siskiyou mouutains. To au Ort-joman
reporter who applied for news con
cerning the progress of the road be
yond this tunnel, Manager Koehler
gave the following information: tne
grado and the high structures between
the Gravo creek tunnel, which was
finished early in July, and tho Crow
creek tunnel, a distance of seventeen
miles, aro finished and track laying
will proceed with only slight interrup
tions to urave ureoic. inere win
probably be no serious delays in

the present terminus, and Cirants
pass, ninety-eight miles south of
Roseburg. Regular trams will not
run beyond Glendale until the road is
opened to Grant's pass, which will be
done about the middle of October.
From Grant's pass to Ashland, a dis
tance of forty-fivel miles through
Rogue river valley, the road is easy
of construction, and it is expected
that the line will be in operation to
Ashland by the end of the year.
Thirty-two miles of road lxtvnml
Ashland will finish tho Oregon and
California company's share of the line
connecting Oregon with Ualuoriiu,
but these thirty-two miles are in the
SiBkiyou mountains and quite as
difficult of construction as in any like
distance through the Cow creek hills.
There will be six tunnels, aggregating
G100 feet in length, the longest hem.
a little over 3000 feet.
