C3) ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY. JULY 31, 1S83 Have you seen the sun spots? Special council meeting to-night. The Queen is duo from San Fran cisco this mornimj. Portland's taxable property aggro gates $20,000,000 in value. Two dollars a day and board are the wages offered harvesters in eastern Oregon and Washington. The Edith is receiving a overhauling, and will be out ness for two weeks. general of busi- Tin plate 14x20 is selling in San Francisco at 85.50 per box. Heavy importations have reduced the price. Even the hens are affected by the drouth and the cash value of Iheir staple production is 45 cents per dozen. The Gen. Miles will leave for Gray's harbor at five o'clock this morning. She will return to-morrow afternoon. Hen's eggs 1,200 years old have been discovered in St. Elmo, Franco, and for the first time Portland realizes what strong opposition is. , Yesterday's Portland papers had the nsual quota of dispatches; the W. U. T. Co., seem to have the best of it,- a foregone conclusion. C. W. Fulton, city attorney, has tondercd his resignation to the city council, his other business requiring his undivided time and attention. Mrs. Hewitt and Miss Clara Hew itt start this morning on an extended Tisit to Lake River, Clark Co., W. T. The Clara Parlwr has been chartered for tho trip. Grading on the Oregon Short Lino is progressing rapidly toward Boise City, and trains are running to Little Rattlesnake, a distanco of fifty miles cast of there. The Gen. Miles and A. D. Field arrived in from Tillamook last Sun day. The -4. B. Field will leave for Tillamook, to-morrow from Main street wharf, at six a. m. The Northern Pacific Railroad company will soon commence tho con struction of a large grain elevator at JLlbina. Its capacity will be 45,000 tons. Tho cost of tho building and machinery will bo 8800,000. "Col" Jos. Dolph, the little five year old son of Cyrus Dolph, fell from the balusters of the Seaside house Sunday night, seriously injuring him self. A doctor was immediately sum moned from Ft. Stevens, and the lit tle fellow attended to. Livingstone Stone, of the United States Fishery Commission, who has just returned to San Francisco from the east, states that 5,000,000 salmon eggs will be placed in the fisheries on the McCloud river this season and noxt year. Trout eggs are also to be planted. Her Majesty's sloop-of-war, Heroine ran up her pennant to the main yesterday afternoon, and swung out en .$hite to Victoria. As she passed down the stream every steamer saluted her, the ships displayed their colors, and the crowd on the dock cheered, all or wtiicn sue amy ac knowledged. The first mate desired us to make particular mention that she is a "sloop-of-war." The projected Astoria and ForeBt Grove railroad is the absorbing topic in Washington county. Tho belief is prevalent that the road, if built, will enter wasmngton county by coming down Gales' creek, that stream, in the opinion of many, offering superior natural advantages to Manning's creek, its bed, for nearly the entire length, being supplied with gravel sufficient to ballast the entire road' bed. Pacific county W. T. is to have a newspaper. It is to bo published at Oysterville. Mr. Bowen is to bo the editor. It is to be called the Pacific Journal. We are glad to se such evi dence of prosperity with our neighbors across the river. Chohalis county has a newspaper, Pacific county is going to have one, Tillamook should have one too, and it maybe that Wahkiahum county may have a paper somo of these d&ya. The C. Southard Hulbert sailed for Now York yesterday. Sho i3 tho first vessel ever chartered from Astoria, and the first in lump to carry salmon from here to New York. If the rates Drevail at which she takes salmon round tho Horn, tho N. P. R R, will havo to give our caunerymen special figures to get them to ship salmon overland. The extra rate paid from the Columbia for salmon has heretofore represented an annual tax of 40,000 which represented the advantage Sacramento canners had over the Columbia shippers. Here after this will not exist. Roscoe Dixon's new eating house will be opened to-morrow. Evervthin has been fitted up in first-class style and his well known reputation as a ca terer assures all who like good things to eat, mat ai. ins piace tney can oe ae comnioaaiea. The salmon catch for this year presents a good many singular features, which have been discussed from time to time in these columns. It is only intended in this article to present a few figures. While we do not guarantee the exact reliability of the following compila tion, yet, it will be found almost accu rate, and as near absolute correctness is it is at this writing possible to pro cure. From July tilst, 1881, to July 31st, 18S2, there were shipped from tho Columbia river 575,153 cases of salmon; of this quantity 383,424 cases went to foreign ports, and 191,729 cases went to San Francisco. During the salmon season of "S2 there were shipped to foreign ports, 174,329 cases; and to San Francisco, 83,340 cases: 100,000 cases more were sent to England on tho Wolfe, Glaujarry and Elmll, just after the close of the season, uU.UUU cases remained on the docks and 100,000 cases in the canneries. From July 31st 'S2 to July 3 1st 'S3, inclusive, there have been shipped rom the Columbia river 374,553 cases. It will be noticed that these gnres differ materially from last ears; for, while last year the foreign shipment to August 1st aggregated just double the domestic shipments, this year, leaving out the lMherVs cargo from either side, the domestic shipments nearly double in aggregate the foreign shipments. Since the sea son of '83 began, there have been shipped from the Columbia river 23G,- 35 cases, of these, 117,878 cases went to England, and 118,857 have gono to San Francisco; adding tho JhdbcrVs 38,237, which started to New York yesterday, gives an aggregato of ship ments from the Columbia since April 1st, of 274,972 cases. Of this seasons ack, about 11,000 cases were burned in the fire on the 2nd inst.. leaving the output for the season, in round numbers 000,000 cases. Splendid Score When the Gciu Canb't camo in! fiiht last Sunday afternoon on her j a broom.and on inquiry it was found that she had on board the Astoria base ball club, returning from their victory at Uwaco. Several games have been played between the Miles club ot Fort Canby, W. T., and tho Astoria boys, and on last Sunday a match game was played on the grounds of the former club at llwaco. The Miles club was composed of Herringer, L. F.; Buffington, R. F.; Cornish, 1st B.; Clark, C. F.; Gould, S. S.; McCudle, 2d B.; Smith, catcher. The Astoria club had Nickerson, L. F.; Grant 1st B.; Lee, 2d B.; Hare, R. F.; Vtn Dusen, P.; Wise, S. S.; Bruce, C. F.; Thayer, 3rd B. ; Parker, catcher. J. C. Darnell and L. A. Allen were scorers, and J. 15. Denney.'of Fort Canby, was umpire. In the first two innings the Astoria club played with eight, men. On the second innings of the Miles club, Griffin at the bat put a foul ball in his eye, compelling the substitution of Cooper for the rest of tho game. The scoring for the nine innings tallied: Miles club, Cornish. 1; Cooper, 1 ; Gould, 1 ; McCudle 1; total 4: For tho Astoria club, Nickerson, I; Grant, 1; Lee, 1; Thay er, 1; Parker, 1; total 5; being the best game of baseball ever played by an Astoria nine, and a score which u seldom equaled on the coast. Another game is announced for next Sunday. Death of Capt. Bocbau. It is with sincere regret that :t wide circle of friends and acquaintence3 hear of the death of Wm. Bochau, which sad event took place yesterday afternoon. Somo timo ago a soft corn on the side of his foot gave him con siderable trouble, finally resultingin an open sore. He went to Portland for medical attendance but was unable to get any relief. The ultimate cause of his death appears to be pyaemia. Capt. Rochau was, until about a year ago, bar pilot on the Mate oj California, and then was afterwards master of the tug Pioneer. He was a native of Holstein, a eel about 43 years. A peculiarly distressing feature is the strange fatality that seems to ittend the family. But comparatively short time ago his brother dropped dead at the Cape; a week after his ephew, Walter Pohl, was swept from his side off the Pioneer, and now his death results from an apparently trifling cause. They were captured near uakland, and were fully identified by Andy Barlow, former guard at tho prison. Alex Grant, administrator of the estate of Peter Grant, deceased, has brought suit in the circuit cotut against D. B&cr, A. G. Spex irth, C. S. Wright, F. J. Taylor, W. B. II eadinton and John Hahn, form er councilmen of tho city of Astoria. The complaint alleges that on the 27th day of November, 1831, by reason of the unsafe condition of the roadway, the estate aforesaid was damaged to the extent of S5.000, and that the do fendants are liable and responsible therefor. To the surprise of a good many. uio bicycle contest, at rortiana was won by Rippcrton, who made 26G miles and 13 laps, taking first money, $400; Prof ilorrill won second money, $100, with 253 miles, 8 bps, to his credit. Of Willie WaTen's riding the JTetcs says: "Warren was the fa vorite with a great majority. His riding was the most attractive, his form the finest, and his tjuiot bearing universally commended. But he was weak from sickness when tho race started, and his stomach would retain no food whatever. Nocessanly he grew weaker and weaker until win ning was hopeless, but bore himself bravely, and leaves the city with no fewer friends than had ho been the winner." A Dude in Astoria.
