General Ord of the United States army, who took passage on the steamer City of Washintfton at Vera Crtiz for New York and was taken with yellow fever, compelling his re moval to the shore while the ve. sH was uuaninlliMML died his4. light at 7 o'clock. Edward Otlio Gresap Ord was born in Alleghany county. Aid., in ISIS, and was a son of James Ord. a veteran of the war of 1812. He graduated from West Point in l&iO, and entered the artillery brunch of the service, serving for three years arainsl the Seminole Indians. In 1S-1G ho was ordered to California, wljere he 'romanied for some time, aiding materially in the preservation of law and or tier in those early (lays, un rsep- tembcr 14, 1SG1, he was com missioned brigadier-general of vol unteers and assumed command o( a brisrade of Pennsylvania reserves under General McCail. On De cember 20th ol the same year he defeated a confederate force under FJimrt tiPMr tIia Pftlniiinc. fnr which he was breveted major-general on May 2, 1SG2. He was then ordered to the army of the Mississippi, and for a time com manded the important point of Corinth. General Ord did gallant at the memorable battle of work I u!;a on September 19. 1SG2, was wounded at the battle of IJaichic and commanded a corps during the siege and capture of Vicks burg and Jackson. He was wounded in the severe fijyhtinjr which resulted in the capture of Fort Harrison on the 2flth of Sep- temltcr. 1SG4. For his services on i his occasion he was breveted maior-jreneral of rosulars, and fiom January to June, 1SG5, was in command of the department of Virginia. He participated in the siecrc ot retcrsbunr and m the camnaifxn timt enttcd at Appo mattox. He received his commis- sio as brigadier-general the regular arm' on .luh 2G, 1SG0. After the war he was stationed for a time on the Pacific coast and later commanded the department of the Gulf. General Ord was well and favorably known in Cali fornia, two of his brothers bemir pioneer residents of that stale, and the general himself having spent a number of years on tie coast.
