(2) ASTORIA, OREGON: . THURSDAY JULY 19, im State Population. Rhode Island is the state that has the largest population in pro portion to its urea, the extreme smallness of the latter giving it an exceptional density of habitation. This state, with its 255 persons to the square mile, being excepted, Massachusetts then becomes very remarkable with its 222 to the squaremile. No other is near it; but New Jersey is next conspicu ous with its 152, and Connecticut with 129. New Yorkss great cities bnng'her fifth on the list, with IOC persons, in spite of her comparatively large area. Five states only have population be tween 100 and 50 to the square mile, these being Pennsylvania and Maryland, with about 95 each; Ohio with 7S, Indiana and Illinois with 55. At the other of the scale of states is Oregon, with not quite 2 to the square mile, while ev en California and Nebraska have not quite G. The territories are all, of course very thinly peopled in pro portion to their areas, except the District of Columbia, if indeed this can be classified among them. The District is naturally far more densely populated than any of the states, having 2,900 to the square mile; but obviously it is to be compared in this respect rather with cities or counties containing cities. These various densities are based on the census of 1880; in all cases they are now greater, as the populations have since then increased, while the areas have re mained the same. Tildcn BediriYas. An "old and valued friend"' of S. J. Tilden in a recently reported interview, says: "I am satisfied that Tilden views his public ca reer as a matter so absolutely in control of the public decision that he will tacitly abide by the result of a renomination. In regard to the idea of excessive strain upon his physical condition, he has been fully prepared for any contingency of this kind, not merely by his rapid restoration to health and vigor, but by his changed relation to such a campaign, should it oc cur. At one time, not long sinco, even his immediate followers abandoned the idea of his further leadership and went to seek their fortunes in other directions. Many of them are now somewhat alarm ed at the prospect of his renomi nation, as they have set up for themselves or joined adverse in terests, but that Tilden will re spond in the affirmative to a proper demand by the party and the peo ple there is not a particle of doubt. It is also his positive conviction that the time, opportunity and necessity for his identity, with a movement for the renomination of a ticket which was elected by the people, but denied by the tribun al in" 1876, is how at hand. The recent course of Hendricks has, perhaps, given this idea more positive- vitality than it seemed to have a. few months ago." Quarantine was invented in Venice in the year 1157, all mer chants and others from the Levant and other eastern ports being obliged to remain in the house of St. Lazarus or the Lazaretto forty days before they were allowed to enter the city. Various southern states copied the example of Ven ice; the habit soon spread into every European country, and was introduced by the Venetians into Syria and Egypt. At Gaza or Beyroute-the-gutrdian who form erly exercised, kept one deni zen of the Lazaretto from commu nication with another, was a Vene tian, while the sick were attended by a medico hailing from some part of Italy, who looked at them from a safe distance through assa- fcetida smoke. uuRGLAiuEs are so common m T Massachusetts that a Naugatuck merchant has posted this on his safety "We keep no money in this saie. liusis lor tire only: our money is up to the house; come up. We hare four shotguns, two rifles, three horse pistols, and one revolver7alI loaded and ready for -use, and warranted to kill at ten rods. Time spent here ki'ti me-wasted." Then follow the figures of the combination, so that it a burglar is determined to get iahe;can,do.so without breaking the lock. , ' A New departure in journalism is said to have been originated by the proprietors of the New Orleans Democrat. They have fully equipped a branch office on a barge, had it towed up the Missis sippi, and it is now floating down the river, stopping at all points of interest for the purpose of gather ing information concerning the country all along the river. The barge is sixty feet long, with twelve feet width of beam. Its inner accommodations comprise business, editorial and job offices, composing and press rooms, sleep ing apartments, aining-room, kitchen and stable for horses used in making land , trips back from the river. It is practically a fully equpped newspaper estab lishment afloat. The scene of the massacre of General Custer and the seven com panies under his command is to be marked with a granite monument, inscribed with the names of the slain. BORN.
