35 ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY- JULY 15.188 Fire Insurance. A memorial has been sent from San Francisco to the Portland fire insurance agents, of the following tenor: "Gentlemen: The com bined experience of th& Fire In surance companies doing business in Portland, has, as you are aware, been far from encouraging for several, years last past. If from the entire premium- receipts in Portland during 1882, there be de ducted losses, commissions, rebates-brokerage, bad debts,- and thcTheavy traveling and olher' ex penses, it will be found that not only has no surplus been carried forward for the payment of future losses on some 130,000,000 of out standing risks, but that a de ficiency exists, which, with some of the companies who have been longest among you, runs up to thousands ol dollars." It appears from the foregoing, says the Commercial Reporter, that $30,000,000 of fire risks are being carried by these insurance agencies in Oregon, at a "deficien cy represented in the above sec ond paragraph of the memorial. Now if it should again be the fate of this city to have another fire like that of August, 3879, and two or three others since, what might be the result with the companies "who have been largest" as is above referred to? The San Francisco Commercial News says that the manufacture r j. , t i i ui canneu lomaioes nas reacneu a point where the home demand is less than the product. The result is that tomatoes are selling with out any profit to the manufacturer. While the quantity put up on this coast seems large, it is but com paratively a small amount of the total pack for the United States. In seasons when there is a partial failure of the tomato crop east or west, our local manufacturers would be helped by an eastern demand. The item of freight is such a large one, however, that it is seldom, even when the eastern market is comparatively bare, that our manufacturers can ship the article at anything but a loss. The outlook for the coming season indicates that tomatoes will be offered for sale at lower figures than prevailed last year. These remarks" refer to the ordinary quart cans, or 2 lbs. Tomatoes in gallon cans are in good demand, and it will be nearly three months before the new crop will be canned, prices. will undoubtedly .be .maintained and probably be in demand before they .can be re placed by the new. A Harrisburg dispatch says that the Pennsylvania Republi cans, are confident of electing their ticket. Indeed, there is no question of success among them. The republicans have a clear ma jority of votes jg.the state, and all that is needed" to insnro success is real harmonious action, as was foreshadowed by Wednesday's convention. Probably success is greatly increased by the composi tion of the ticket. The fact that Cameronism was not an issue in the convention, and that the body worked 'out its own conclusions without dictation from the outside, was often spoken of with pleas ure. "I have been fighting Cam eronism for thirty years," said one leading delegate, who is a stal "wart, but still claims to have been anti-Cameron from the beginning. "but I never saw it smashod till 9 nowl" . English capitalists have gone into the cattle business on th plains in such numbers and with so much capital that it is believed thev will soon control the cattle trade of the. interior of the conti nent. The high price of beef at " Denver has elicited many pro tests, ana one ol the newspapers of that city states that although Colorado claims to be a cattle state, the business is virtually in the hands of less than a dozen par ties, who have dictated prices for several years. The Norwegian Storthung has resolved that every able-bodied adult in Norway shall receive musket and be taught the use of it at the state's expense. New York is suffering from a grain- pool, which adds two to two Md auhalf cents per bushel to the cost of shipping from that port. The Old TlcKet. " j A Saratoga special to the N. Y. Times, says that the New York Democratic leaders are earnestly putting forward efforts to have the next national conven tion of their party held in Sara toga; and it is lather significant that the simultaneous sentiment in favor of the renomination of the old ticket "Tilden and Hendricks" is making rapid headway. What was scouted as ridiculous and ab surd three or four months ago is now spoken of as both rational and expedient. Leading Demo crats in New York, Albany, Syra cuse, Buffalo and other points of the state, are fast coming to the conclusion that renomination of the old ticket is the easiest, if not the only practicable way of escap ing many difficulties that the national democracy will have to encounter in their next convention. The selection of a candidate on whom all factions could cordially unite would be almost impossible in view of numberless rival aspir ants, while the adoption of a plat form on which they could all agree would be equally difficult; but when the "old ticket" is in the field, rival candidates could at least console themselves with the re flection that they all had been treated with impartiality, and as for the platform none should be needed. The great fraud of 1876 would absorb all other issues, and the rectifying of that wrong would furnish incitement to action. This, at least, is the way the advocates of the "old ticket argue. "If the various countries main tain their present rate of increase," says Mr. Gossolin, Secretary of Embassy at Berlin, "fifty years hence hence the United States will have a population of 100,000, 000, Russia approximately 163,- 000,000, Germany 83,000,000, the United Kingdom 63, 000,000, Austria-Hungary and Italy both 44,000,000, France only 40,000,000; Germany has already in round numbers 7,500,000. more inhabitants than France, but in this reckoning Algeria is not taken into account." For war purposes, however, it is observed that the balance is not so heavily against France, for wheras iu Germany there are only 965 males to 1,000 females, in France there are 791. Germany has, therefore, 3,500,000 more than France." Ex-Secretary McCullough says it is advisable to leave a por tion of the national debt unpaid. "At one time we heard . a great deal about not handing down ' a debt to 'posterity, but in my opin ion a national debt should bo maintained, say about $100,000,- 000. I say this because it is a fact that government securities fill a place that can be filled by no other securities, and are perfectly safe." ' General Sherman has been vituperating Whitelaw Reid of the N. Y. Tribune, and McCul lough of the St. Louis Globe, and the latter gets eren by remarking that, as General Sherman regards Dorsey and Brady as "high-toned, honorable men," the editors can afford to submit, the case "without argument." Thk San Francisco Post pre dicts that by the time all legal re sources are exhausted in the cas of Miller, the alleged murderer of Dr. Glenn, "it will be conclusively shown that Dr. Glenn shot him self in the back with a double- barreled shot-gun." Maine and Missouri were both admitted into the Union the same year 1820. The former at that time was entitled to seven repre sentatives to congress and the lat tr to one. Now Maine has four And Missouri fourteen. The official returns issued by the board off trade shows that the emigration from the United King dom for the month of May this year to places out of Europe Was 97,603, asrainst 70,626 in Mav of last vear. A curious mark of changed re lations in the matter of learning languages is found in Ohio, where, out of 650,000 scholars, 44:8 study Greek, still fewer, 418 French, while more than 40,000 learn Ger man.
