Kc Sails stofcm. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY-IT. JULY 18,1883 Astoria's Present Jiceds. Thet are many; among the most pressing are wider streets; that is, when a street is made or permanently repaired it should be widened; a better sys tem of "fire alarm, so that the location of a fire may be instantly determined; the present system is good enough for" a village, but Astoria covers too much area, and has-too many valuable buildings to go on any longer under that system; the telephone, or telegraph after the fashion of the fire distriot alarm furnishes the easiest solu tion of this problem; greater care in the erection of flimsy buildings and the building of flues; increased watchfulness on the part of citi zens with reference to faulty chimneys; the banishing of Chinese from all parts of the city except some certain defined limits; in creased facilities in the matter of hose and hose carts; it will be long time yet before the Columbia water works are in operation; the employment of a special officer whose sole duty it shall be to look after stoves, flues, and all places where fire is likely to cause danger; an ordinance prohibiting the crowding together of wood en buildings without a certain space between, and the strict en forcement of all ordinances now in force. If they are bad repeal them; if they are good let them be enforced. "I have been officially advised that President Arthur will use our road in visiting the Yellowstone region this summer," said Herman Hanpt, general manager of the Northern Pacific road, in Chicago last Monday. If he does he will be treated royally. "We expect to get our road through about Sep tember 14:. "YVe are now about fifteen miles west of Helena, and work is being pushed east from Missoula. The gap is only about 120 miles. "We will open up as fine a countryas lies under the sun. There is no desert on the line of our road. Our elevations average 3,000 feet less than the Union and Central Pacific, and this gives us an advantage of about ten degrees less in temper ature. Ye use the Mullen pass in crossing the mountains, and 500 miles of our road will be pro tected by trees. 'We are planting them now. This is comparatively a new idea. "We intend making them a substitute and improve ment on snow fences and sheds This will effectually guard against blockades in the winter, which have heretofore been a great ob jection to overland travel." The Pennsylvania Republican state convention met last"Wednes day and, in relation to the tariff question came out as follows "We unqualifiedly approve and de mand continuance- of that sys tem of protection to home indus try which has proved itself the basis of national independence, an incentive to industrial skill aud development, and a guarantee of a just and adequate scale of wages for labor, and we denounce, all at tempts to reduce the rates of tariff below a level which will accom plish these objects; that any surplus in the public treas ury, arising from rebundant revenue, should, after paying the national debt, as conditions per mit, be distributed from time to time tQ.the several states upon a basis of population, to reliev them from the burdens of local taxation and to provide means fo the education of their people. Governor Schuyler Crosby of Montana, arrived at Chicago from the east last Wednesday, and in an interview said: "I saw presi dent Villard, of the Northern Pa cific railroad and learned definite ly when the road will be opened for business. The last spike wi be driven about twenty miles west of -Helena, Montana territory, on September .3. Mr. Villard has made arrangements with different roads for special cars and has is sued invitations to a large number of prominent men to be present All leading railroads will be rep resented and many prominent politicians and other public men nave signified their intention to attend. A Boston man wants a di vorce from .his wife because though & brunette she will insist on wear ing dresses of a light-blue color. Prohibition. Astoria, July 11, 1883. DITOIt ASTOBIAX: You pronounce prohibition "im practicable, and therefore useless to argue," but even then you seem unwilling to let go, and add that from the days of the wedding feast at Cana down to this moment the history of all prohibition move ments is -alike." Now, your read ers must very naturally infer from our nice little dig in Sunday's Astobiax at "fanatics who preach prohibition," and the repetition un der two headings in to-day's issue, that you rather like the subject, notwithstanding its being "useless to argue." And, Mr. Editor, I am of opinion your readers like it too, and wpuld be decidedly inter ested with a little of the "history" with which you are so familiar. Cana is a long way off, and that little winery, with its miraculous product of the pure, unfermented wine of the ancients, was run long time ago; and probably we will be more interested by strip ping over the pages till we come to those headed Maine, and take a esson there. And with all read ers and friends of our stirring As tokiak", you will also confer a great favor on Fanatic. That sterling Englishman John Bright, in a speech at Manchester last week said that in the United States next year would be elected i president, and for his part he didn't know what the Republicans and Democrats were going to fight about. 5Tis the tariff, John, the tariff! 'Tis the tariff that mends us and makes us and breaks us; a live tariff issue will part us as wide as if oceans and deserts were h'ing between us! Chicago papers say that so shameful is the stale of affairs there that outside the city it is "considered a disgrace to be a citi zen." That is a hard assertion about the fourth city in the Union. Detroit claims to have the most local steamboat traffic of any city in the country. Astoria has the most in proportion to its popu lation. NEW TO-DAY Piano for Sale. NQUIRE AT RESIDENCE OF CAPT.
