ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY JULY 12. 18S3 The Massachusetts almshouse, at Bridgewatcr, was burned last Sunday. The GOO inmates were safely removed. For the week ending J uly 7th there were 1,050 deaths in the city of New York. Of that num ber 672 were under five years of age. A Maet;boro, S. C, jury has decided that Jamaica Ginger is an intoxicating beverage, and fined a man $200 for selling it without a license. A' new town has been laid out at the point where the Oregon Short Line railroad is expected to enter Oregon. It is to be called Ontario. The cholera is devastating Egypt. There were ninety-six deaths from cholera at Bamiotta, forty-eight at Mansurah, one at Alexandria, six at Samanud and six at Shirben on Sunday. On Saturday the number of deaths were seventy-eight at Damietta, sixty-four at Mansurah, nine at Samanud, nine at Shirben and one at Alexandria. "To be dishonorably discharged from the service, to be confined at hard labor m a penitentiary for eighteen months and to have the facts respecting his crime and its punishment pub lished in the newspapers of Iowa, the state from which lie was ap pointed to the army," is the sen tence of Paymaster "Wasson, who stole thousands of dollars of pub lie money in order that he might pay "debts of honor1' contracted at the gaming table. Governor Butler's methods of securing political sucedft re mind the Tribune of those of the man who made money in real es tate business. His plan was to purchase a house or piece of prop el in a respectable locality and then announce that he "was about to devote it to some disreputable or disagreeable purpose, where upon the people living in the vi cinity would purchase the prop erty of him at a high valuation to get rid of the nuisance. He made money, but he was not popular. Governor Butler thinks that if he can make himself a nuisance to the respectable people of Massa ohusetts "Iris political success is as sured. At "Washington it is thought that a call for $15,000,000 more of outstanding ol per cent, bonds may be looked for by the 15th inst., or as soon as Secretary Fol- ger returns, unless he is persuaded out of it by the bankers while he is in New York. The banking interest is very much opposed to calls, and is very desirous of put ting off the step as far as possi ble. It is thought by the treas ury officials, however, that there is no other way to avoid the further redemption of these bonds sub ject to call, because money is pil ing np in the vaults, and current demands on the government for ordinary expenses are not enough to disburse the receipts. At the rate the year has started in it woufd not take two months to make a money stringency by lock ing up the surplus in the sub , treasury in New York. DIED.
