f2) ASTORIA, OREGON: "WEDNESDAY-- JULY 11.1RS3 No Pear of Isccndlarism. Sundry tolegrams wore received in this city last night from San Francisco to the effect that the impression prevailed in insurance circles there that Astoria feared incendiarism, and if . that was the case to cancel cies. The parties ceived .the dispatches ed back 'that the all poli who re repression was unfounded, which is the case. Perhaps it is as well to state here that . the vigilance committee which was organized here was or ganized with the intent to punish thieves who had endeavored to profit by an accidental fire. At no time has Astoria feared incen diaries, nor is there now the slight est reason to apprehend any danger from incendiarism. That impression, if it exists, is an erro neous one. Apart from incidental risk in common with other cities, there is no reason for insurance companies to be apprehensive in regard to policies on Astoria prop erty, nor is there any city on the coast where life and property ia safer to-day than in this commu nity. En l'assant. Ax article in last Sunday's is sue on Community of Interests has been objected to by men whos opinion we respect, because in it we spoke of "fanatics who preach prohibition." The question needs no qualification, but a few words of comment may be in order. The word "fanatic" is not a term of re proach. Some of the best and purest men that ever lived were "fanatics," Ignatius was a fanatic; so was Loyola, so was Simeon Stylites, so also Huss, likewise myriads of others from Saul of Tarsus to John Brown at Harper's Ferry. A fanatic is a man or woman who means well, but al lows imagination to outrun reason, and gives zeal the upper hand of judgment. A fanatic sees the end of his idea, but wants to go across lots to get there. As to the question of prohibition, it is, in our opinion, impracticable, and .therefore useless to argue. It savors of Utopia, it has no show of praotical fruition and however deplorable the fact may be, never theless it is a fact, as we look at it. You can restrain but you cannot prohibit. From the days ot the wedding feast at Cana down to this moment the history of all pro hibition movements is alike. Iowa Politics. How nicely prohibition and pol itics mix'is illustrated at present by the distracted condition of the Republican party in Iowa. At the last state convention the party managers came squarely out for prohibition with the result that a state which gave 7S,12G majority for Garfield in 1SS0, is likely to go Democratic .this fall. " Iowa has the grandest war record of any state in the Union; she spends an nually more money for education than do the eleven southern states put tQgether, and she naturally Votes the Republican ticket, and has sent an almost solid Repub lican delegation to congress for a generation, but the Hawkeyc state objects to being run by fanatics or sentimentalists, and kicks as vio lently as New York did against bossism last fall. UuDEits have been received at Stettin from the Chinese Legation at Berlin to stop their work of enrolling a crew and the purchas ing oi provisions lor tne new Chinese ironclad, which was con structed there. The orders for the sailing of the vessel for China have been countermanded. The Brooklyn Eagle praises the Ohio Democratic platform as "flexible " and "a mosaic." The words are well chosen. The reso lutions can be twisted into any de sired shape, and together they form a curious specimen of the art of inlaying contrasting colors. Yellow fever has appeared on the Texas frontier, and the most strenuous exertions are being made to prevent its spreading The hostile Apaches are to be pufon the San Carlos reservation and kept under control of the war department. Oun boloved country has a new official-superintendent of state. nr ana navy qepartmens dujiq The Portland Commercial Her ald finds apology for the tardy action of the holders of the Asto ria Land Grant in the decision of a court in 1875. The apologist exhibits more zeal than its em ployers do judgment. The 2Fcios has invented a new term, "cast iron gall," and in its own columns furnishes abundant definition of its meaning.
