ASTORIA -' - - - 0B2G0N On the Northern Pacific road' the finest day's trip is the first out from Portland, up the Columbia. The route follows the Columbia, from Portland to The Dalles, a distance of eighty-seven miles by rail. To tho latter point the river has a width of one-half to two thirds of a mile. It runs with a very rapid current and mighty volume. It carries to the seaj though few are aware of that fact, nearly as great a body of vatr as the Mississippi, the boasted Father of W aters. Jiut the river is not the greatest attraction. The mountains which bound the river impress one ihr riio-t. Thv are lofty generally torraued are 1 mostly neavily timbered. lhey have bold blufls, swelling outlines and ure frequently top-finished by Ionjr lines of battlement-like ridges, sertinelod by pine and lir everywhere. These loin moun tain stretches ami circling river reaches are the finest 1 have ever seen. 111 audition, mere are manv miles of sheer basaltic cliffs, long the very face of which and on the brink of the river the railroad runs. These cliffs are four hun dred to five hundred feet above the railroad. hi several cases their summits overhang their base, apparently threatening a catas trophe to the railroad and den fillinir in of that side a sud of the river. The idea of battlements and fortresses is constantly sug gested by the great elevated benches on the one hand and by the even lines o the summits on the other. Capt. Aiusworth is putting a small steamer on tbc upper Co lumbia to carry supplies to the upper country for (he civil en gineers of the Canadian Pacific railroad and employes of a railroad company in which Capt. Ains worth is interested in the Kootenai country. This will make business for a custom officer at or near the Little Dalles, near Fort Colville.
