ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY JUNE 22, 1888
Is it Christian?
It was our pleasure and our
, privilege last Wednesday evening
to attend the public installation ot
tkc officers of the grand lodge of
Oregon I. 0. G. T., in this city.
It was with surprise and regret we
Ward a portion of DrJ.W.Watts1
raaarks. Dr. Watts took the
same -stand that others do; that
hg;h license is of no permanent
arail: what he demands is prohi
bition. Without any intent on
-ttr.part to join issue with that
getatlBan on the principles he so
vociferously advocates, we must
respectfully dissent from the style
ofargament. If we understood
him rightly, .he told a story of Gen.
Nwwiith, in which he made that
gentleman say that in conversa-
" taoh with a man who wanted to
star"asaloon in his settlement,
r aacl wfe asked liimrwhat he-would
do in case a saloon was started in
defiance of his wishes, that he
(Nesmith) would "burn the build
grdown,?and.him in it" We re
spectfully submit that this is not
9 tke 'lewd of .argument that will
win converts. The audience sat
in silent surprise, while Dr. "Watts
exulungly went on to declare that
tb cause would triumph. "We
would in all kindness ask Dr.
"Watts if this is in consonance
-Twitk'His supposed.character. Does
tke end justify the means? He
either meant what he said or he
didn't. If Dr. Watts defends the
doctrine of force as exemplified in
burning men and individuals who
refuse to be otherwise coerced, it
may be well to know it. He owes
, it to his Astoria audience to ex
plain. A right reverend or wrong
reverendswbo signs his correspon
dence "Yours in Ghrist, J. "W.
. Watts,' Vis supposedly in unison
with the sentiments of the Divine
Master. If it be Christlike to ad
vocate incendiary- measures, we
feavegreatly erred in our concept
tioa of the attributes of a Chris
tian and owe the Doctor au apolo
gy for being uncharitable inour
misconstruction of his language.
If men who sign themselves
aYors in Christ" are in these
days of free thought invested
with power to disregard the in
junctions of JHim 4who preached.
tne oerraon -uu tne mount, tuen
these questions are impertinent
andDr. "Watts is right.
Pointers.
The tin plate manufacturers
kave organized an American as
sociation the object of which will
be to develop the plate -industry
in this country.
.Nebraska has one wdman minis
ter, one woman lawyer, six womem

wofflM physicians. Many women
are engaged in editorial work.
The cost of transporting a barrel
offtoarfrom Minneapolis to Boston
isl. The freight on a sack of flour
koJdiag a barrel from Minneapolis
to. Glasgow, Scotland, is $1.20.
A recent visitor to one of the
caief cities of Minnesota remarked
that one fact which impressed him
as mack as anything was the sobri
Wy, ."steadiness and thrift of the
Irish-bora citizens- of the North
west: "
""Wyoming claims to be the
greatest stock growing' region,
next to Texas, in this country.
Over eight hundred thousand
head of cattle and many thousand
sheep 'are now feeding on tho
.platHsi'.
'Vjjere, it left to me said," said
Jefferson, "to decide whether we
seW, feave'a government without
newspapers or newspapers without.!
a government, 1 should not hesi
tate a moment to prefer the
latter.
VTfee taxation on spirits, beer and
tobaoeo yielded the French govern -meat
last year $133,000,000. This
is eeough to pay all the cost of the
government, except interest and
peastons, and leave a surplus of
$8,000,000 over.
J Hw growly the pension bounty
of the National government is
liable to abuse is shown by the
Set that the CpansiohT agent m
Philadelphia has recovered no less,
'theft honflred pension
ertifioates which were in the
IhweVof pawnbrokers, who j-egu-
krij drew the money and held the
puMiemr ia a sort of slavery
thro a the obljjatkras of debt.
Gen-. Miles has telegraphed the
government from Vancover a
recommendation that tho principal
chiefs interested in Moses' icserva
tion started from Spokan Falls,
and are now curoutc to Washing
ton under ehargo of Captain
Baldwin. He says: 1 earnestly
request that efforts bo made to
make an amicable and permanent
settlement with theso Indians,
while in Washington, not only to
satisfy them for n poi tion of their
reservation restored to the public
domain, but also, if possible, to
purchase their relinquishment to
the remainder of the Moses' reser
vation. It is a second Black
Hills and prospectors are already
pressing upon it and will soon
give trouble or endeavor to have
another portion taken from the
Indians. I think it would be ad
visable for the government to
give the Indians $150,000 for their
benefit and induce thm to take
land in severally on the Colville
reservation."
The .executive committee of the
Northern Pacific railroad, has
passed a resolution calling on the
treasurer and general auditor to
prepare and submit a statement
showing the net earning due the
stock holders at the close of the
fiscal year ending the 30th instant.
The uncompleted portion of the
road is now only 118 miles. This
gap will be ready for travel, it is
thought, by the end of August.
Tho formal opening of the road
will take place at the western
portal of Mullen's tunnel, which
is just west of Helena, Montana,
eurly in September.
Senator Hampton, of South
Carolina, whose Virginia hpeech
elected Garfield in 18S0, made a
speech in Camden last "Wednes
day, the occasion being the erec
xion of a monument to the Con
federate dead. The Senator said:
"We of South Carolina were
neither traitors nor rebels, nor
was our war in any proper sense
a rebellion. It was strictly a civil
war, growing out of conflicting
interests and different .construc
tions of the constitutions by op
posing sections of the country."
