Lafayette carried an Infant son of "Corn Planter," & chief of one of the Six Nationg, to France and educated him in all the accomp lishments of a young man of rank. When he returned to America, ac companied by a lady of great beauty and good family, there was no finer gentleman in the New World. Yet within four andtwenty hours he was found in the streets of Boston, drunk, wrapped in a tattered blanket and surrounded by a party of his sav age countrymen. Next day he deserted his Frejiclifriehds, and when Aaron Burr was traveling from Canada to New York, in 1789, he found the unfortunate wife of the irreclaimable savage wandering in the woods, cruelly maltreated, stripped of her prop erty, almost naked, and subsisting on berries and wild fruit. The Signal tells of a Yakima City doctor who found himsilf over the river from that plaoe last week with a wagon, and no bridge, ferry, or other means of getting across. The nearest and best he could do was to go clear up to Kittitas valley, fifty miles distant, there cross and go down on the other side. A trip of 100 miles was thus made necessary to get over the distance of one mile. At Quito, the only city in the world on the line of equator, the sun sets and rises at 6 o'clock the year round. Your clock may break down, j'our watch get cranky, but the sun never makes a mistake here. When it disap pears from sight for the night it is 6 o'clock, and you can set your watch accordingly. In one part of the city it is summer season and in the other part it is winter. Rochester Democrat. .Sometimes the simplest means will accomplish the most desirable results. As an evidence, read the experience of CJias. S. Strickland, 9 Boylston place and 150 Harrison Avenue, Bosten: The pleasure which I hereby attempt to express cannot be half conveyed by words. Physicians of very high character and notoriety have heretofore de clared my rheumatism to be in curable. Specifics, almost num berless, have failed to cure or even alleviate the intensity ol the pain, which has frequently confined me io my room ior tnree months at a time. One week ago I was seized with an attack of acute rheuma tism of the knee. In a few hours the entire knee joint became swollen to enormous proportions, and walking rendered impossible. Nothing remained for me, and I intended to resign myself as bst 1 might to another month's confine ment to my room and -bed, whilst suffering untold agonies. By chance I learned of the wonderful curative properties of St. Jacobs Oil. I clutched it as a straw, and in a few hours was entirely free from pain in knee, arm and shoul der. As before stated, I cannot find Words to convey my praise and gratitude tot'he discoverer of this king of rheumatism. The grant ofr land to aid tho railroad from Forest Grove to As- tona is valuable. It is probable that it will offer inducement for building the roa'd. The line sur- veyed some vears since followed ., XT . . s . . the jSelialemjiver in its windings. It was claimed, that the countrv tfc i -r was so rough no.other course was open. - The Nehalem valley will soon possess railroad facilities, which will give it an outlet to As toria and Portland. The building of this road will open for settle ment a timbered section between the Willamette valley and Astoria. The soil of this forest region is ex cellent, and all the good timber land will be in quick demand. Willamette Farmer. Of one fact I am convinced, and that is, St. Jacobs Oil does cure rheumatism. For years I suffered with rheumatism in my left shoul der and right arm, and last " fall I was incapable of attending to my duties, and lay many a night un able to sleep on account of terri ble pains. A few weeks ago a severe attack of this trouble struck me, and this time I concluded to try the St. Jacobs Oil, I must ac knowledge, with but little confi dence in its merits. I freely con fess that the result has completely astonished me. The iirst applica tion relieved the pain very mate rially, and the continued use of only two bottles has completely cured me of this chronic evil, and that, after the most eminent phy sicians and their prescriptions had been of no avail. I therefore con sider it a duty to publish the above for the benefit of all sufferers with rheumatism and. kindred" com plaints. G. A. Heilman, Editor Republican Pittsburgh Pa.
