A Sax Fraxcisco special says T Captain Besse, who returned from the north several days ago, where he has been in the interests of 'capitalists, to report upon the pro ject of building a road from Rose burg to Coos bay, has completed '"hisreport and will submit it to the partiefianterested on his arrival in Boston. It is understood from private sources that the report is favorable, and that the road will be commenced as soon as the pre liminaries are arranged. A fact brought out by the Brit ish postmaster-general's annual report is that during the last fis cal year the United States sent Great Britain 10,500,000 news papers and received from her 8, 500000. This shows that Amer- loan newspapers may claim a great as well as growing transat lantic circulation; and upon the whole the British journals do cer taanly display more knowledge of """Am erica and American affairs "l&ajLJthey tfid some' years 'ago.- They n$ longer Jaacyphicago n jJdezvous for savages, nor sup- - -BMppose.the JGreeribackers to be so galled from the color of their gar ments. It is not tobe denied that all calculatio&s regarding political re- asults are rendered more worthless - tban usual at present by reason of the undeniable state of unrest in which a large body of .the voters of' bath parties - find themselves.) The independent voter is abroad in the land, and all the signs indi- !catetJiat?his voice "will be a no tent one. Pointers. . The issue upon which the Re publican party of Ohio -will go be fore the -people this year, the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette says, is ".whether the liquor traffic ought to be taxed or ought to continue free. The Scott law taxes the traffic, and the Republi can party is responsible for it, and upon that principle it will succeed or fail in the approaching contest." At a' recent southern camp meeting the eloquent divine said: "The 'wheels of the righteous shriek and groan as they toil up the hill of salvation and over the ruts of temptation and the bridge of damnation, and have to scrowdge pretty lively to get np at all; but the sinner with greased wheels and flying colors, slips down to tarnation like a dose of oil, with a rip and a whizz, and raises no dust whatever.' Young cattle are reported to be dying in the upper part of the John Day valley with the same disease that caused so much loss on the Malheur and other parts of Eastern Oregon two and three years ago. Only yearlings and sucking calves are affected so far. 1 his disease ca"uses the death of young, fat and apparently healthy cattle within a short time after the appearance of the first symptoms and no remedy for it is known. Very fat cattle arc more liable to its attack than poor ones. MARRIED. Tuesday, April 17, 1883. by the Rev M.D.Wilson, Rector of Grace Protest ant Episcopal church, Lewis R.
