CO jEfcc gailg gstafetu ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY. MAT 29. 1883 Tfertk Considering. TJndsk the significant heading, "Opposition Possible," the "Walla Union of the 25th has a cogent ar ticle discussing the feasibility of shipping "Walla "Walla wheat to ti seaboard via the Columbia rirer. For y ears before the construe tion by the O. R. & N. Co., of a railroad from "Walla "Walla to Portland, the commerce of the in terior, says the Uhion, vras carried oa by steamboats on the Columbia riTer, and a narrow guage railroad from the former city to the river. Since the completion of the O. R. Jtlf. road the boats have been virtually withdrawn and the river bears little of the products of the interior to market. " It would not require a very heavy investment to again make the mighty Columbia swarm with boats. The government s slowly cutting a canal and building locks at the Cascades. But it will be, at the rate of progress in the past, many years before the locks and caaal are ready to use. In the meantime a narrow guage railroad acroM the portage could be built and stocked, ready to carry all freight offered. Such a road ought to be constructed for $?,500 a mile; or a total of S30,000. ' The day the road is opened for serviae there will be numbers of steam boats and other crafts on the low er and middle rivers offering it freight. Another narrow guage road, which need not be over ten miles long, and which should not cost over $75,000, would fill the upper river with boats required by the local traffic. With these two portages built it will bo compara tively an easy job to construct the narrow gauge railroad from "Walla "Walla to the Columbia. The original road cost less than $10,000 a mile, and that too, when rails were sold for double the present prices. At present prices a first-class road, amply stocked, ought to be built from the city to the river for $250,000. To sum up, in order to obtain op position to the present monopoly it is neocssary to expend: Cascade portage road S 30,000 Dalles portage road 75.000 Walla Walla to Wallula 250,000 Total 355,000 Tan Astorian has always main tained that the proper route for the wheat of that great and fertile area of which "Walla Walla is the commercial center, is down the Columbia, to load at Astoria in deep draught vessels for foreign shipment. The article from which we quote is in the same view and well illustrates the corroboration of our views by those who see in the opportunity they suggest a means of freeing themselves from the exactions of a monopoty and getting the grain to the consumer at less cost (and therefore increased profit to the producer) than by prescut methods. Ik discussing that widening sub ject known as "woman's sphere" it .may be mentioned that a na tional bank at Marion, Io., and one at Raleigh, N. C, have woman presidents, and that Mis. M. H. Galloway is president of the savings bank at Pon du Lac, Wis.; Sarah F. Dick, the cashier of the first national at Huntington, Ind.; Annie M. King, cashier of a bank at "White Cloud, Kan.; Jennie Combs, cashier of a bank at Mid dleville, Mich., and Miss M. V. Bend, treasurer of the savings bank at Florence, Mass. m . ' ii DIED.
