Going down the great Jackson route from Grenada, Miss., a reg ular old homespun native of the state entered the sleeping car and paid for a berth. He had never been inside a car of the kind, and everything astonished him. "When the porter came to make up the beds I saw that the native was greatly perplexed, but as" he made no direct appeal it "wasn't my duty to post him. He was the first one to make preparations for bed. . He glanced anxiously around, pulled off one boot, and then took a rest for five minutes. When the other boot came off he had solved the problem. Pushing his boots under the berth he started for the rear platform, and nothing was heard from him for about ten minutes. Then he puts his head into the door and called eut: "All you 'uns- in thar, look out, for Pm coming!" And come he did. He had dis robed while standing on the plat form, made a bundle of coat, vest and pants, and as he shot into bed, after a run up the. aisle, he gurgled eut: "Old Mississippi may be a little slow, but she alius gits thar, just the samel" Detroit Free Press. The Washington National Re publican says: "It was reported that the Vanderbilts, Sidney Dil lon, the Chinese five companies, and two or three steamship lines had combined to build a railroad across the Isthmus at Chiriqui, in opposition to De Lesseps' canal. The road, if it should be built, can be put through for $5,000,000 or perhaps $4,000,000, less than 20 per cent, of the cost of the Pana ma road, whose stock is worth about 200. Congress appropriated $2,000,000 a year ago for the es tablishment of naval stations near the proposed terminal points oi the projected road. The stations have never been established, and the appropriation will lapse July 1st, unless measures are taken to locate them before then. It is un derstood that secretary Freling huysen objects to steps being ta ken, for diplomatic reasons. The Chiriqui road would shorten the distance by ocean to San Francisco 800 miles. The steamer Pilots plying be tween San Francisco and Lake ville, exploded last Friday. Five passengers were scalded to death, and several others were drowned. The Question Settled. There is no use in arguing the question of the potency of some substances for especial service in emergencies. They will do all they promise, and more, if judi ciously used. The following from Mr. P. Murphy, of No. 1 Fire Sta tion. Ottawa, Canada, bears upon the point stated above. Mr. Mur phy savs: I had occasion to use St. Jacobs Oil recently, and must say that it is the best Liniment I ever saw used. I caught cold trorn getting wet at a fire, and it settled in my shoulder and down my DaeK to my nip. l suitercct a great deal from the pain. I was advised to try St. Jacobs Oil. I did so, and after the fourth appli cation I was entirely free from paiu. I eannot speak too highly of it, and advise others to use it. HOME COMFORT: After a Rainy filde a Couatry Physician TellH What He Thinks of Some People. I wish to gracious tome people would learn when they need a doctor and when they don't, exelalmod Doctor E , asbo entered his house in a coscy little village in the interior of the State of New York, after a tedious night ride of many mile&r I have been down among the mountains to see a man, who the messenger said, was very sick and not likely to live 'till morning, unless he had immediate holp; and found him suffering from a rathor sharp attack of colic, which his family might havo reliored in ten minutes, if they had a grain of sense and two or three simple reme dies in the house. But no : th ey must remain as ignorant as pigs, and when the least acho or pain takes them, send for a doctor, whether they pay him or not" "Why, Doctor, what kind of simple reme dies as. you call them, do you expect people to keep in the house?" asked his wife, as she poured him a cup of hot tea, "In this case," aaswered the Doctor, "if they had only pat a OJENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER oh tho man's stomach, he would have been all right in an hour, and saved me a dreary riio," In all ordinary complaints it cures at once. All diseases are eliminated from tho system Ty what may be roughly called expulsion or extraction, or by a uakn of the two processes Benson's Plaster prsfenotes both. It incites the torpid organs to act, and sends its healing influence through he myriad pores of the skin. All other plasters oblige the patient to wait They give him hope for to-morrow, Benton's plaster aires him help to-day. Which is better, do you think Buy the CAPCINE, and keep it in the hease.
