? Ya. 'fro. ,- r? O) Jgfcc gailg steistu ASTORIA, OREGON: PKIDAY MAT 25, 18S3 CmeHome to Boost. Or late, New York and Philadel pfeu. papers haro found a new topic for editorial comment. Time was when they informed Pacific Coasters that the Chinese were coming to this country by direction of Divine Providence that they might be converted .and saved and translated to a Christian heaven. The jok'e was that they were actually sincere; they believed it. This in itself was all right, but our astern mentors went farther. They said we were wicked, cruel, oppressive, and intolerant of the gentle Chinamen, and they in righteous wrath rebuked us for such unseemly conduct toward the seek Mongolian. But a change has tken place The Sun, Kertdd, World, Ledger, Times, and other metropolitan journals are to-day gravely com meriting on sundry discoveries of debauchery, prostitution, and kindred vices, which Senator Edmund's "little brown man" has been spreading in Atlantic cities. Not the least noticeable is the whimper that pervades astern journals concerning it They all say "what will those Pa cific coast people say? "We com mended the poisoned chalice to thir lips, now we cannot expect sympathy from them. Alas, we know how it is ourselves, now." And when they reflect that out of a population of 250,000 San Fran cisco has 30,000 Chinese, while out of a population of 1,250,000, New York has but '3,000 Chinese they can perhaps realize why it was that California and the coast "kicked" against that which the Atlantio people thought a ''Mani festation of the wisdom of Provi dence" and try to "convert" the dirty heathen. Trme aad False Journalism. The Brooklyn Eagle comments on the mistaken idea of suppos ing that because a man has plenty of money he can successfully con duct a newspaper. "Capitalists might purchase every existing newspaper in the country to-day," says the Eafle, "and to-morrow a trained journalist with a good conscience, fair ability and credit for a band -press and a few reams q paper would arise to speak for the public and would destroy all the capital put into the organs " This is true. The people are quick to discover when a news paper is designed to promote other interests than their own. They ma' read such a paper, but they will not be guided or influ enced by its opinions, and they will mistrust its motives even when it is sincere. A newspaper, to wield power, must-be made for all rather than one man for the whole people. It must carry to the minds of its readers the con viction that -it is earnestly the friend of popular rights and not tbe champion of individual schemes. ifen who have special enterprises to promote make a mistake when they secure the control of news papers for that purpose. The mo ment their hand is recognized the weapon it holds becomes harm less. The people are the capital of an honest newspaper. It is their friend and they give it success. Hooey enables a trained journal ist to add strength and? interest to his paper snd to make it more de serving of popular support. But all the -money in the world will not, as the Eagle says, give influ ence, power and success to a news paper that speaks for special inter ests and not for the public good. NEW TO-DAY Notice.
