f - k. m ft .f' r 3) Sglw Sails azisu. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY MAY 20, 183 Rainier is to have a tannery. Port Townsend has a national bank. The Lombardian is in tho stream, flour-laden. Cowlitz county mills on the dollar. taxes are 14 Albany has a ghost, which oblig ingly appears in the daytime. The Mist reports grading on the Kalama division progressing slowly. Win. McCormick announces that his steam laundry is now ready for business. Divine service in the Congrega tional church this morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. J. JfcCormac officiating. A shower of sulphur in Sweet Home valley last week made the resi dents think of the sweet bye and bya. Capt. Gray gives notice concern ing trespass on lm property, lie has been to considerable expense in im proving it and wants to improve still further. Meeting at the Y. M. C. A. room this afternoon, at a quarter to three. Citizens and strangers are equally welcome. Talking about sunsets, those plank in front of the city hall are noticeable. They are ten inches thick and thirty six inches wide. Rev. J. V. Milligan boing absent in Portlaud there will be no service in tli6 Presbyterian church this evening. Service as usual at 11a.m., and Sab bath school at 12:15. Up to last Tuesday there had been sixty-five saloon keepers tried for selling liquor without liceuso in Port land, and fifty-six convicted. The fine is $100 for each offense. The assessment roll of the city of Astoria as returned by city assessor E. C. Holden, shows the amount of taxable property in the city to bo $1,093,577: last year it was $1,130,972, an increase of 49 per cent, in twelve months. The roll has not yet been equalized. There are about twenty logging camps between here and Astoria on this side of the river, and they employ on an averago ton men each, and cut about sixteen thousand feet a day in each camp. Some idea of the vastness of the lumber interests on the Colum bia may be gleaned from the above when it is understood that tho Wash ington Territory side of tho river, with its tributaries, has fully double tho number of camps. Mist. A meeting has been called in Portland of all ex-members of the volunteer fire department, for the purpose of seeing what arrangements can be made for a parade on July 4th. It is thought, says the Standard, to bs a good scheme for all the old mem bers to meet on tho Fourth, which is just a half year since they disbanded, and unite in a regular old-time parade, with red shirts and an engine or two. It is suggested that the fireman's pro cession take place in tho morning, so as not to interfere with the Grind Army parade. Two parades in a day would be novel, and would fill up the day nicely. The Ocean Park Association has bought one hundred and fifty acres of ground in Pacific county, W. T., fourteen miles north of Ilwaco, hav ing a sea. frontage of about half a mile with an uninterrupted view of the coast for 20 miles. There is a natural grove on the ground well adapted for camp-meeting purposes and good wa ter is plentiful. Rev. W. B. Osborn, the superintendent, will have the ground surveyed and plotted and pro ceed to sell lots. It is the intention of tho Association to hold a camp- meeting there this summer, and to provido a place combining opportuni ties for religious exorcises with rest and sea bathing. A Case in Point Astoria, May 19, '83. Ed. Asteria: Your late article on tho necessity of the improvement of the mouth of the Columbia first, is well exemplified in the present rates of freight. A vessel has just been taken to load salmon at Astoria at 55 s. per ton, but no more can be had at the same rate. Tho same class of vessels is offered to-day in S&n Francisco at 45 s., a difference of $2.50 per ton nine cents per case in the freight to Europe between San Francisco and the mouth of the Columbia river with which the Wil lamette and St. Helens bar have nothing to do. An aunual tax on the salmon interest alone of $40,000, by reason of the mouth of the Columbia river not being on a competing footing with sister ports. Commerce. Go to the O. K. Asteriax: I have often thought that i would be a great pity if the territory of Washington should bo admitted into the union under its present name. The capitol of the Nation was named Washington in honor of him who is called the father of his country, and to give that name to any state would be inconvenient, create confusion, aud in a word, would be contrary to the "eternal fitness of things." An article in the Standard of the 17th, taken from the Yakima Signal, called my attention to this subject and I think the name therein suggested, Tacoma, or Tahoma, whichever is cor rect, would be very appropriate. Un like most of tho Indian names of that region, it is short, asily prouounced and euphonious. Nevada, Idaho and Montana, are all beautiful names, and seem espec ially so when their meaning is taken into consideration. Whether the meaning of the word Tahoma as given by tho writer referred to, "almost to Heaven" is appropriate as applied to that territory or not, I will not pretend to say, but leave those to judge who have had the privilege of residing there. At any rate the present name should be changed to something else before our sister terri tory is admitted into the union. ClTIZO. Roll of Honor. Asteriax: I thought I would drop you a line concerning mail matter. Week be fore last the Gray's River Astobiaxs went to Portland. Mr. Chance Baid the Astoriax office sent them there. Last week our bundle of Astoriaxs went there. I suppose the "Astoriax office" scut them there, but if the As toriax office could look in our mail box every week they would think there wa3.a screw loose Boraewhero. I will send j-ou the packages that aro here new: "J. Anderson, Ft. Canby, W. T.; J. Mortimer, Ft. Canby, W. T.; C. Holberg, Ft. Canby, W. T.; S. Holberg, Ft. Canby, and others. This is a fair sample of mis3ent mail every week. It is no wonder our Asto riaxs go to Portland. I hope some one will wake tho Astoria Post Office up. With regards, Chas. M. Stark. what becomes of our astoeiaxs. Chadwell, May 17, '83. Ed. Asteriax: May 8th the mail arrived, and the package of Astoriaxs for this office was not in the sack. Last Saturday the old package of Astoriaxs for May 4th arrived, but no others; so you see that if we get them at all they are rather stale reading. Nearly all of The Astoriaxs for this office come in one package, and when that fils to come, about a dozen of us get left. Considerable growling is the result, for you are aware that no man likes to pay for anything and never get it. Some ono is to blame. The fault is in your own city. So you can see to it yourself. Three time3 in six weeks not a papes came; it is too much. Some of your subscribers are threatening to drop the paper unless it comc3 more regularly. I remain yours truly, DAX. J. Ix-OALLS. We are surprised that either of our correspondents should suggest the possibility of our postmaster making a mistake. The thing is impossible It must be somewhere else. Proba bly the action of the water between here and Stark's Point changes the address on tho lettersj or maybe it is that the mail carrier between here and Chadwell forgets to deliver his bundle. But the postmaster or the mail route messengers must not be blamed. The last time we had the presumption to suggest that we paid postage to have the Astoriax sent promptly and that our subscribers be tween here and Portland growled aad stopped their papers, we received a letter in which we were roundly rated for pre8umiig to even hint at such a thing. Wo must grin and bear it, bear it anyhow, though it is no grin ning matter. Thtj Weekly Astoriax is made up for the mail every week by a man who is specially ra d for that purpose and who has never to our knowledge made any mistake in assorting and doing up the bundles. He tikes the sacks of papers to the postoffice in time for Friday morning's mail, and what hap pens them after that is one of those thigs that we must not inquire into. Only pay the postage, and when a man writes Baying "stop my paper, it only comes half the time." sadlv do so. and take a fresh grip on our truEt in Providence.
