The ladies of the Baptist church are arranging a Sunday school floral concert to be given Sunday night June 10th. The Ona got to Parkersburg all right last week. The run has com menced and a good season's work will be the probable result. Joseph Mitchell has been ap pointed general timber and mineral inspector of the Northern PaciOc, from Puget Sound to the Pvocky mountains. In the list of the drowned on the Orappler sometime ago appeared the name of Chas. Lord. Many supposed it was the brother of Harry Lord ofT the Shubrich. Happily for him it was not. The Victoria arrived in from Nanamio with coal j'esterday morn ing; the Walla Walla and State sailed for S. P., and the Willamette for Tacoma with railroad iron from the O. It. &N. dock. The Portland Fireman's Mutual Relief Association was organized last week. Each member is to be assessed CO cents per month, and any one who becomes disabled so that ho cannot perform his duties or cam a livelihood will be entitled to $10 per month. Among the documents deposited in the corner stone of the Odd Fel lows' Orphan Home at Fairview last Thursday, was a brief statement of the fact that up to date, Beaver Lodge No. 35, of this city was the banner lodge in contributions to the enter prise. In a drunken row near Salem last Thursday morning Jas. C. Mur phy killed Jas. Kelloy by shooting him in the face with a load of buck shot. There are three classes of peo ple who claim tho right to use the torni "we" emperors, editors, and men with a tApe worm. The San Francisco musical festival be gins June Gth. Almost to Heaven. It is now proposed to change the name of Washington Territory, upon her admission into tho United States, to that of Tahoma, which is said to be the proper orthography for the name written Tacoma. Tahoma is an Indian word, meaning "almost to heaven," and was tho nanio given by the Indi ans to Mount Ranier, on account of the great height of that mountain, whih is put down at 14,000 feet above sea level. We feel inclined to favor the proposed change of name for many reasons. Nearly every state and territory has a county of Wash ington and also a town called Wash ington. Should Idaho and Washing ton be admitted as states, with North Idaho as an adjunct of the western oistcr, and with names changed, wc would have the distressing anomalies of a Washington county in Idaho and an Idaho county in Washington, bo sides a town of Washington in Idaho county, state of Washington. Besides, tho word "Tahoma" is very beautiful and euphonious, and ono which fully expresses the future spiritual condition of the leading politicians of Washington Territory and northern Idaho, who, in the contingency hoped for, will bo most decidedly Tahoma almost to heaven; certainly as near heaven as thoy can ever hope to be. Idaho Statesman. Notable Steamboat Trip On Wednesday the government tow boat made the trip up the Columbia, river from the lower Cascades to the foot of the Cascades canal, without any especial effort, carrying from 120 to 125 pounds of steam. Tho stage of water bein thirty-three feet above low water. She passed Garrison rap ids with ease, and at tho Middle Block House rapids, over which no steamer has heretofore been able to pass at high water, tho hung for a moment only, but with an additional five pounds of steam passed them. Big Eddy rapids did not even check her speed, and without any further trou ble the foot of the lock was reached. This news will be of considerable in terest to all steamboat men and others, and shows tho value of the improve ments already mado in tho river, which, although intonded to benefit low water navigation, have also im proved the higher stage, and it may be considered perfectly safe and practicable for strong steamers to reach the foot of the canal up to a high water stage of thirty-five feet.
