TRUE Temp Is not signing a pledge or taking a solemn oath that cannot be kept, because of thenon-removaiofthecause liquor. The way to make a man temperate is to kill the desire for those dreadful artificial stimulants that car ry so many bright intellects to premature graves, and desolation, strife and un happiness into so many families. A lot of Boston tourists were traveling in a sleeping car, also a Nevada traveler. In the morning when tbe porter went round to collect his assessments on hoot blacking there was a great com motion among the Boston tourists. Some paid him a five-cent nickel and thos3 who had no nicksls were compelled to yield up short bits. All the while the Nevada man, dressed in ordinary clothes, sat reading his newspaper. When the porter reached him he looked up inquiringly: "Did you black my boots, sir?" "Yes, sah." "You did a splendid job. Never had my boots blacked so well be fore on this line. Here's throe dollars." When the porter pocketed the money the Boston people looked up astonished, and presently it was rumored about that John Mackay was aboard or Enoch Strolher was out on a campaign trip. In a few few minutes the Nevada man and the porter met (by chance) in tho smoking room. "When does my sleeping ticket run out?" "Your time was up, sah, at Ogden, but if you wants to ride to Reno, boss it all right sah." The traveler gave the darkey a drink out of a black bottle, and the porter winked continually for nine seconds as he drank ihe traveler's health. Six dollars saved. Economy is the road to wealth. Carson, Nev , Appeal. A counterfeiter recently escaped from a St. Louis deputy marshal. Some of the man's money must have been good. Mr. Edvc. Hamilton, of tbe Grand Opera House and Uhrig's Cave, St. Louis, Mo., is a gentle man well known to the theatrical profession and the respective patrons of those places of 'amuse ment. His experience is most pe culiar and 6pens a new case for the inestimable remedy spoken of. "I had been riding on horseback one afternoon," said Mr. Hamil ton, "and was pretty well tired out. In getting off my horse 1 gave my right leg a severe wrench, but as it did not inconvenience me at the time I paid no attention to it. In a very short time, how ever, an excruciating pain came on in the vicinity of the hip, thus recurring overy ten minutes and seeming to grow worse with every recurrence. I went to a doctor, who made an examination and said nothing ailed me. But I knew better, for I could hardly walk. He gave me something to bandage the leg with, but it was of no more avail than so much wa ter. Late in the evening 3 was attending to my duties at the Gave and limped so badly that several people asked me what was the trouble. A friend advised me to geb St. Jacobs Oil, and told me I had undoubtedly strained a lead ing sinew. It was too late that night to get the medicine, and even after I got to bed it was like a severe cramp, coming at periods and 1 passed a miserable night. Early in the morning I procured a bottle of the Oil, and, saturating a silk handkerchief with it, bound it around the affected part. It seemed to work its way right in and found tfie sore place. I was quiet all day and kept applying tho Uil. In the evening 1 was straight as a die, and no trouble from the strain have I noticed or experienced since." Happy Families.
