No French soldier erer had more resolute or sublime courage than he. He was Vicar ofVaux Yilaine, in the Marne Department. The Department was occupied by the Prussians during the war of 1S6G. A Prus sian officer was assassinated in the parish of the priest, and as the as sassin could not be found, two in nocent inhabitants of the place were, in accordance with military usage selected to suffer death as something' of an expiation for the murder. Thev were about to be- executed had made their prepar ations for the fatal shots when the brave Abbe intervened, and offered his life in exchange for the release of the tyo enforced host ages. And there was no bragga docia in the act. His offer was accepted by the authorities, and he, in turn, prepared himself for the fatal aim of the executioners. As his last hour apparently drew uncomfortably near, he had ad ministered to him the final rites of his church. He was led out to the place of execution, his eyes were bandaged after they had seen the squad of armed soldiers before him, he did not falter, and then the selected executioners them selves consulted before sending to his grave an innocent man. They sent a message to headquarters, and in due time had the satisfac tion of receiving from the superior authorities an order countermand ing the execution. France and Germany both applauded the self sacrificing spirit of the noble Abbe, the press of the latter country be ing particularly generous in its praises oi his self-sacrificing spirit. He out-lived the terrible ordeal seventeea years, and "has now been buried with civic honors as well as religious ceremonies. S. F. Bulletin. Dr. .T. Speck, who is connected with the Wilmington JEuery JjJven ing speaks rather enthusiastically of St. Jacobs Oil. Dr. Speck states that he used the Oil' in his family as a household remedy, a sort of universal panacea for all aches and pains, and has ahvays found it to act most happily. His attention -was called to it by the many testimonials in its favor, and he one day used it upon himself for sore throat. Two applications were sufficient to effect a cure. He also used it on his little girl for sore throat with gratifying suc cess. The same child had scarlet fever this winter which left the tendons of one leg much con tracted. The little prattler couldn't walk without assistance aim suf fered much inconvenience and pain. Several applications of St. Jacobs Oil restored her limb to its normal condition and she has not experienced any trouble since. Dr. Speck says that he has also seen the Oil act charmingly in toothache. 'He thinks St. Jacobs Oil is a sterling remedy, and does not hesitate to recommend it for rheumatism, etc. When Ladles arc Attractive.
