y C2 035332 gta gai&j gVstacmn. ASTORIA, OREGON: "WEDNESDAY....' MAT 2. 18S3 En Passant. An article in the Orejonian of the 30th ult., entitled "Mr. Villard and Portland," makes the. excel lent point that something more than railroads are needed to make a great city: that a commercial center depends more upon water ways than railways. It instances Indianapolis, which, despite its being a "great railroad center," is far behind Chicago which occu pies a commanding situation on Lake Michigan. "Why," says the Oregonian, "is San Francisco a greater city than its neighbor, Sacramento? It is because it is on deep water, and if all the rail roads in America should terminate at Sacramento, it would still be secondary." Just so. Our con temporary states the fact exactly as it exists. The article goes on to speak of other shipping points. It says: "Our wheat and salmon must always be sent away by ships, and we cannot load a ship on Puget Sound without playing into the hands of a rival city." This is also true, but the implica tion is not warranted. Why ig nore the natural "shipping point" for the great Columbia basin? We assume that the Orcgo nian intends being just as well as generous, and that in discussing a subject of such im portance it rises in thought be yond the Willamette. It speaks of sending wheat away in ships. The Astoriax has demonstrated plainly and positively that wheat can be shipped cheaper from As toria the natural shipping point for the Columbia basin, than from Portland. Denial of this in no way affects the validity of the fact. Our Portland contemporary speaks of shipping salmon, as though it were a doubtful project, and one that Portland must with many regrets let go to other points. We need but remind the Oregonian of a fact that it oi course knows already; that salmon is constantly shipped from Astoria, and not from Portland. A refer ence to our files shows that dung last season there cleared from the Columbia river, foreign-bound, salmon-laden, the WarilvcJc.JSdwin Reed) Glengarry ,Langrigg Ifall, Eliocll, Jan. tf. Bain, Wallace town, Wolfe, Annie Johnson and others. In all over 330,000 cases of sal men left here for England. The number of cases loaded at As toria come very near aggregating the same figure. So that the fact that salmon "must always be sent away by ships" need not consti tute one of the cares of life in the pleasant inland city on the Wil lamette. The Orcgonian is eminently correct in calling the attention of Portlanditps to tho fact that the bars in the Columbia should be improved; their improvement is of vital importance to Portland. But the communities of the lower Co lumbia which The Astokian rep resents, object to the tacit as sumption that, Portland is all that is worth mentioning in discussing a matter that affects the interest of us all. Portland is nearer the producers of the northwest than any other possible port can be. And that settles the matter of the shipping point. Oregonian. This is "a little more than kin and less than kind." It is brief and sententious. Its brevity con stitutes its only merit. "While the verbiage of the above brochure is susceptible to a variety of con structions, yet we presume it is the intention of the writer to convey his idea that Portland by reason of its situation has "the call" over any other shipping point in Ore gon or Washington Territory; present or prospective. Without going into details, at present, it need but be said that our Astoria chamber of commerce demon strated last season that the entire cargo of deep water ships could be put on board cheaper at Asto ria than to be partially loaded at Portland. So much for the pres ent state of affairs. In the event of the completion of the road from Forest Grove, it would become a question very easy of solution as whether it would be cheaper to ship Willamette wheat to Astoria there to be loaded, or to carry it first to Portland, there to be stowed and loaded and unloaded and handled and finally rehandled at Astoria to the great loss of theJ "producers of the northwest." The Oregon Short Line, accord ing to Sidney Dillon "will go to tide water." There is no intention says the Nez Perce News to stop at Baker City and the recent agreement with the 0. R. & N. Co., does not prevent extending the road; there are now parties of surveyors on Snake and Burnt rivers, and this force will be augmented as the season ad vances. "A monument is proposed to Peter ooper's memory." Peter Cooper built his own monument, and the good healthful influence of the Cooper Institute will per petuate the name and fame of that good old man better than the grandest monument that was ever built.
