According to the eastern papers San Francisco has a worse record for divorces than Chicago or St. Louis. The New York Tribune esti mates the population of the coun try to have been on the 1st of Jan uary about 54,400,000. The largest vessels in the Eng lish navy cost a million and a quarter to build and a thousand dollars a day to keep at sea. There is truth in the remark that when a person writes a poem to kill time he may be pretty sure that time will have its revenue and kill the poem. The Post thinks driving Ireland into America and calling on the United States government to keep it quiet, is about what the course of Great Britain amounts to. The India census gives 253,891, 821 inhabitants in a space one third the size of the United States, or 1,372,858 square miles, making India fifteen times as thickly set tled as the United States. Here is a fine specimen of mixed logic from the Boston Transcript: "As fortune favors the- brave, the coward hasn't an even chance, and therefore you can't blame him for wishing to keep out of the un equal strife." The New Orleans Picayune reckons up a total of 393,500,000 profit to American builders of Mexican railroads through govern ment subsides, and suggests that the Republic is being practically sold out to "New York and Boston millionaires." Observers have noticed a ten dency of late of colored voters to drift toward the Democratic party. This has been especially remarked in Kansas, where the large col ored immigration of a JVw years ago has been scattered over the state and given a fair opportunity to show its worth and leanings. It would be interesting to know how soon a "nitro-glycer-ine habit" will be added to the increasing varieties of drug en slavement. The Boston Herald says: "There is no particular reason for believing that Rossa is a born fool, so it must be assumed that his pretended cable despatches are manufactured for the sake at once of scaring England and encourag ing Irishmen to put money into his capacious pocket. The merest baby of a conspirator would not trust genuine despatches of that kind to a telegraph company." Some ways of Young America are startling, and a notable exam ple of them is furnished by the Iowa children "who recently killed their father in order that they might have things their own way at home. The boy shot the un happy parent, but it was arranged that the younger girl should ac knowledge the crime, on a plea of self-defense, so that her extreme youth might save her. The whole affair was arranged and carried out -with a coolness worthy of vet eran criminals. 'English and American Finance. It is not generally known, says the Globe'JDemocrat) that the Brit ish government machine for col lecting and disbursing revenue handles just about the same amount of money every year as our own. The treasury depart ments of the two countries, in oth er words, are of about equal im portance. The fiscal year of the United States ends June 30; that of Great Britain March 31. Receipts SM5.000.O00 S403.r00.000 Expenditures. 444.500.ooo -124,100,000 The real significance of these j figures, however, does not appear, unless it is borne in mind that $106,200,000 of the total expendi tures by the United States was for the reduction of the public debt, while only $35,500,000 was ap plied by Great Britain to debt re duction. The expenditures of Great Britain, exclusive of pay ments on the principal of the debt, amounted to $409,000,000, hut the ordinary expenditures of the United States reached only $258, 000,000. So, after all, our gov ernment is comparatively very much less expensive than the bare I totals of the fiscal operations of the two countries would indicate.
