It is drab in color, exceedingly heavy, has a. sickening odor, and is suffused by a stringy mucus which drops from it in long vis cous lines. The external pores are partly closed up by a sort of sea bug, which finds refuge in them, and must he an annoying interloper to the sponge-builder; while often a red sea womian, inch or two in length is found far within the spongy fibres, whither he has worlced his way. What is the exact function of the mu cous fluid dots not yet ap pear to be clearly settled. But it is certain that when taken from the sponge and placed on still bot toms, new sponges are propagated from it; and if two pieces of the same living sponge, or of different sponges of the same species, are laid side bv side on the sea bottom, they soon grow together. The vi tality of the sponge, in fact coup led vitli the decrease of the sup ply, suggests that ere many year artificial propagation may h.i e to be used. The "Bos3" Fish Boat. The three-masted schooner Ifcra, now taking in stores at Washington-street wharf, is the largest vessel ever fitted out for a cod-fishing voyage in the United States. Her crew consists of twenty-four fishermen, who, with the captain, salters, split-or.-, dress-gang, two oooks and four boys make up a total of forty men. No more ex pensive and complete outfit has ever been put on a fishing vessel and is only justified b- the large catch her owners expect her to make. The fishing grounds are in the Okhotsk sea, 4,000 miles distant, and the voyage will last between five and six months. A full cargo will he 250,000 codfish, which will weigh out 400 tons or more. S.
