Rebate paster printed cheap at The Astoriax job office. W B. Morse, .1 well-known resi dent, died at St. Helens last Sunday. The state board of pilot commis sioners will meet hero nert Tues day. Jas. G. Kelly, lato bajjsage mas ter on the 0. & C. R. R.. died in Portland last Saturday. E. C. Holden, city assessor, gives a third and last call this morning that any one interested would do well to read. The annual Episcopal conference for Oregon, will take place in Salem from the 7th to the 10th of June next. A man has invented a chair that can bo adjusted to 800 different posit ions. It is designed for a boy to ait in when he goes to church. Hon. A. 0. March, of Winchester, Ind., has been appointed register of the laud office at Vancouver, W. T., and assumed his position yesterday. Judge Stott has been presented with 500 cash, and A. G. Walling with a $250 qold watch, as a reward for their services us managers of the Good Templars' Hall association of Portland. Tho old rookeries on the corner of Mam aril Cheuamus streets are being torn down. It is the intention of Capt. Fiavel, tho owner of the property, to erect a substantial brick building 50x100 on that site. A giant powder explosion near the O. & C. depot at East Portland last Saturday sent fifteen pound boulders flying broadcast. Ono piece made a hole a foot square in the huricane deck of the State of Califor nia, says the JYetcs. On Saturday Henry Villard and party went from Seattle to Port land. On Sunday they went by special train to the O. & C. front. They return to Portland this morn ing, where ho will meet a delegation from tho Astoria chamber of com merce. To-morrow ho will talk to Portland citizens in the New Market theater, and on Thursday he will at tend a reception in his honor at the house of Senator Dolph. Engineer Hurlburt has gone to Astoria to mako a surrey of tho rail road route from that place to Port land, connecting with the West Side line at Forest Grove. There will be three corps of engineers in the field, and the work hurried with all possible dispatch. Mr. Hurlburt and his par ty will begin at Astoria and work this way. It certainly looks from this that there is a strong probability that Mr. Villard s answer to tho Astorians, who asked him to surrender tho land grant of the Astoria & Forest Grove Railroad company, which had been lying bo long idle, will bo that he will construct tho road, and give our friends at "Venico" land communica tion. May "tho good work go brave ly on." Welcome. Villard at New Tacoma. In closing his recent remarka at Xew Tacoma, Hery Villard said: 'L would mako free to say that, as is always the case in constructing a line through new and unexplored countries, the co3t of construction has exceodod the original estimated cost by many millions of dollars, and this deficiency the company would never have been able to meet if it had been bliged to build the Cascide division. The best thing that can be done for you is to complete the main line of the Northern Pacific across the conti nant I do not believe there is any body here or any where on the North Pacific coast that will disagree with me in that opinion; therefore I think the Northern Pacific railroad company and nyself personally have done you the greatest sevice in considering only the completion of tho main lino across the continent at the earliest possible moment, regardless of every thing else. Applause. It only re maius for mo to thank you for your kind attention and to express my re grets that I am not able to speak a longer time with you. It was with the greatest difficulty that I could gee away from New York at all. I have to steer this ship without much help from others there, and tho quicker I return the quicker the main lino will be completed. 1 hope that your present prosperity will conjinuo and all tho expectations of the future of your town be realized, and I assure you that vhat we can do as a corpora tion and as individuals shall be done." Thieving Creel Indians have been chased across the I Canadian frontier by U. S. troops. Reports from Eastern Oregon and Washington indicate big grain crops. Senator Anthony of Rhode Island, is very sick. The Indians and Chi nese are fighting near Victoria, B. C. The Whittlcr is loading at Knapp ton. Salmon Items. The California fish dommisioners have resolved to put 20,000,000 young salmon in California rivers this season Sacramento fishermen ask seveuty cents per fish. The German-American (Jroctr, says the newest feature in the canned goods market is a quantity of Japa nese salmon, of some 10,000 cases on offer in Now York. The London Grocer's Gazette says: "There is an improved demand from the country for good brands of Col umbia river aud the northern rivers. Fraser river fish are almost entirely neglected, and the buyers are cau tious in dealing in it, after their ex perience of last year." The Liverpool correspondent of the London Grocer says: "The extreme cold weather still keeps salmon out of the mindB of our usual lan;e retail buyers, who at this time of the year generally buy a few months' stock. With the exception of a sale to one of our largo dealers of about 8,000 cases of one or two brands of Fraser river there is comparatively nothing to report, Columbia river be ing still held firmly by the original importers, vh. arc well able to carry the present stock over for some months more rather than take lower prices. Portland's Dredger. After much wrangling and disput ing the public has at last been con vinced that the city dredger as a dredger is a success, but its warmest friends have never claimed that it was a snag puller. It seems, how ever, as if it wero destined to achiove notoriety in that line; as Captain Pease, a day or two since, succeeded in hoisting on board a snag eight feet in length and four feet through, which has long laid in the channel at Swan is'and, and which many ships have touched. So solidly was it em bedded that pilots supposed it was a hummock on the bottom of tho river. The government snag puller took it off the dredger and landed it at Ross island on her way up the river. Tho dredger will probably resume work to-morrow as the falling of the Col umbia has lowered the Willamette sufficiently to allow of dredging being done to good advantage. Orcgonian. Hotel Arrivals. You wonder how the miners got along without a doctor in camp, for there were indeed tiniea enough when the services of a skillful physician were in great demand. Tho winter we put in at Calico flat there was somebody on the sick list all the time, and there were days when wo had three or four patients in the hospital at once. As to mediciues, our maiustay was a hot sweat. When a man began to limp around wo didn't loose time by feeling of his pulse, or looking at his tongue. Three or four stones were put into the fire to heat, blankets borrowed for the occasion, and when we got steam on the knots and -twiits and kinks in the chap's case had to unravel. He'd come out as long and flat and thin and white as you please; and if any one pointed a finger at him for the next week, he'd cry like a baby. Next to a sweat we had decoctions of herbs, barke and roots, and ones or twice we tried tho earth cure. On one occasion when a red headed miner from Ohio was hud up with a pain in the side, a stranger came abng from White Dog Bend and said he could euro him by laying on of hands. For three long hours he smoothed away at the patient as steadily as clock-work, and then there was a row. The "smoother" asserted that the euro was complete, while the patient de nied that the pain was a whit easier; and, of course, we stood by our com rade, and gave the stranger a tumblo off a cliff twenty-eight feet high into au old anon drift eghteon feet deep. But, as I said at the start, Bickneas became so prevalont, and our plain remedies had so little effect, that it was finally decided to send up to Sacramento for a doctor. The idea was to have him corao down and brace us all up and the expense was to be borne by a shake purse. A lotter was sent to a dealer in town, asking him to forward a doctor, and in about fire days along ht came. Ho was a young man of twenty-four, just landed on the slope without a dollar iu his pocket, and all ho brought to camp with him was a lancet, some prescription blanks and a stick of salvo for miking sticking plaster. There were four men iu the hospital that day, aud after a bit the doctor entered to take a look at them. It happened that he camo to Big Jim Smith first. Smith was threatened with inflammatory rheumatism, and was in no mood to take nonesnse. "Run out your tongue," said tho doctor, as he bent over the man. Hi" Jim uispiayeu it, nut m sucn a begrudging way that it was plain to see he thought it all both. "Your pulie," said tho doctor, as he reaehed over for Jim's great pnw. "Pulcot I ain't got any!" growled Jim. "Oh, yes, you have. Here it is, iu your wrist Keep still for a mo ment." "Stranger," said Jim after the doc tor had dropped his hand, "d'ye mean to tell me that yo kin feel a man's wrist and tell him what ails his insideBl" "Yes, in a measare." "Excuse my not calling yon a liar, bnt some of tho boys will do it fur me afore you are an hour older." "What are your symptoms?" asked the doctor. "Never had any." "How do you feel?" "Sick." "How were you taken?" "Stranger, what are you driving at?" demanded Jim, as he sat up in bed. "Have you got pains?" "In course I havo! D'ye 'spse Id be lying flat of my back here if any thing leif'n a ton was holding me down?' "Do you ache?" "Raytherl" "Any fever?" "Wal, I git away with a quart of water at a gulp." The doctor sat and studied the case for a few minutes, and then ho came over to the shanty whero tho commit tee had assembled and said: "Gentlemen the case of Big Jim is a Berioui one. He needs a chaugo of diet, sconery and air. My advice is that you brace him up as well as you can on beef tea and chicken soup, and then send him off for a trip to Cuba. I'll look at the other cases in tho morning." But ho never did. When the bojri found that he had corao without even a dose of quinine, and they heard him talk about chicken soup and trips to Cuba for a man who hadn't fivo dol lars to his name, they waited upon him in a sort of hilarious body, and at midnight he went up the trail at the rate of twelve milos an hour, with a crowd behind him aching for his ears as relics. Next day we heated half a ton of rocks, took about six or eight blan kets, and gave Big Jim such a sweat that all his toe nails shed off; and, rather than be cured in the same way, the other men in the hospital got well. "I did have somo faith in the chap," exclaimed Jim, "just a leetlo bit until he 8 zed my symptoms. That 'floored me. The idea of sending two hun- REVOLUTION!
