m Jxz giiilti steiim. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY.. APRIL 15, 1SS3 Ao "Antagonism." A correspondent for whom we personally have the highest regard asks "why do you manifest such antagonism to the railroad and its managers?" Our friend and well wisher is laboring under a miscon ception ot facts. The Astorian is not antagonistic to railroads, nor is it at all inimical to railroad man agers. The railroad is a benefit to the country, and Astoria shares indirectly in the prosperity that it brings. But Astoria is not depen dent upon the railroad. Indeed we hold that if the railroad were made to do what it guaranteed to do, either build the road from Forest Grove or give up the As toria land grant that it would be better for our city. It would cer tainly be better for the settlers who have been between the devil and the deep sea ever since they tried to get a foothold in certain parts of Clatsop county. The Astorian alone, of all the papers in Oregon, has ever since we as sumed charge of it, pointed out the injustice of such action on the part of those who claim to be resid uary legatees of the original grant, and bar the way to pro gressive action. In doing this we are either right or wrong. If we are wrong, then it is wrong for any one to protest agaiust injustice; it is wrong for any newspaper man to raise his voice against monopo ly greed; it is wrong to have a soul ofyourown or to do otherwise than get a railroad pass and keep your mouth shut. As to any "antagonism5 to rail road managers the thought never entered our head. Mr. Villard, who by the way, spent half an hour in Astoria 3'esterday, certainly knows his own business. If his plans include building to or from Astoria, if by taking cog nizance and interest in Astoria's welfare he should determine that the interests intrusted to his keep ing would be best served in in cluding Astoria in his railroad plans, we believe as a shrewd business man he would do so. If he feels that he can ignore At.iria, God's blessing still be ou him; that is his privilege; let him go. Men like Villard are actuated en tirely by motives of pelicy: they have no preference for one particu lar place; their ideas are purely those of utility; capital has no sympatrvy and pecuniary gain is the onlv creed it recoirnizes. Mr. Villard has made it as plain as it is possible that he has no present use for Astoria. Vvre have not as yet met. any one that seemed to take the matter seri ously to heart; but there is no "antagonism" in reference to the matter. What we demand is that the Astoria land grant shall be forfeited. II that doesn't suit Mr. Villard or his colleagues much as the fact may be regretted yet we propose to see it through. The pleasure or displeasure of any individual is a secondary consider ation. Pointers. Senator Bayard thinks that the Democrats will elect the next president by a large majority. To thoroughly enjoy the old song, "A life on the ocean wave," you must a life on the ocean waive. Advices from weather head quarters indicate rain for Astoria and vicinity. It does look very much that way. There are rumors in San Fran cisco relative to putting on an op position steamer between that city and the Columbia river. Chicago has had sixty-nine un doubted murders since the begin ning of the year 18S1, and of all the murderers only one has been hanged. The old Vermont man who heard that there were wildcat mines in Utah said that if the pesky wildcats were down in the bowels of the earth, people must be dreadful fools to dig 'em. "As far as we know," says the Texas Sif tings, "there is not a single instance on record in Texas of a murderer of means having: been punished by law, no matter how many homicides he commit ted." The Detroit Frte Press re marks: cIt is nearly two weeks since the government launched an iron-clad called the Terror, and yet we have failed to see any par ticular change in the policy of Europe." D3'namite is about to be thrown into the shade. An ingenious citizen of Paris, the appropriate home for such discoveries, has pro duced a new compound which J2 calls panclastite. Panclastite con sists of bypoeootic acid, which is one of the numerous compounds of oxygen and azote, or nitrogen, mixed either with essence of pe troleum or sulphuret of carbon. The degree of explosive force is said to depend upon which of the last-named ingredients is used. During the past nine years the exports of American products to the Hawaiian islands amounted to $13,470,178, while during the same period the exports to French possessions have been only 2,859, 704 and to English possession. $8,125,388 that is Haw aii, owinr : to the exertions of her little popu lation of industrious Anglo Saxons and Germans, has used more American goods than the colonies of two of the mightiest powers on earth. The steamer Indiana to-day took the first batch of emi grants forwarded free by the Eng lish government to America. The party numbered 75, and was prin cipally made up of persons evicted inConemara, Ireland. Small as it is, that brief item is full of significance to those who have traced events and studied the late history of Ireland. There can be no doubt that it is the set tled policy of the British govern ment to attempt a solution of the Irish problem by depopulating Ireland, even though to do so it must provide free passage for emi grants to America. These people whom it is now exporting were starving, and were glad to get a chance to go anywhere. BORX. In Astoria, April 7th, 1S83, the wife of O. P. Graham, a daughter. ISTJW TO-DAY Musical.
