Vr m BTtc ndlB QsXszXnzx. ASTORIA, OREGON: "WEDNESDAY 2XA11CH 14, 18&3 "rionccrs or Revolution." A Chicago paper considers a circular sent to it worthy a leader. The document comes from San Francisco, is "a blood-curdling" affair 'with mysterious diagrams, skull and cross-bones and insignia of insanity, and purports to be is sued by ""We, the mechanics, skilled workmen and wagon-workers of San Francisco, the pioneers of revolution, the men who have produced all the real wealth this city owns." It warns the people that in San Francisco there must be an immediate and equal divis ion of all their worldly goods by those who have by industry, ener gy and toil won a share of pros perity and means, and whom the circular denominates as "loafers," .with the shiftless, diunken ruffians who have nothing. The Chicago press, which had its nerves shaken by Herr Host's villainous har rangues, can learn that such silly proclamations have little effect in Californa. The Sacramento Record-Union, in comment, thinks that the San Francisco hoodlum does not represent the mechan ics and wage-winners of that state. The circular declares that these "pioneers of rev olution number 100,000," and that their enemies number but T,000; that the latter have all produced nothing, while the nameless "pioneerj.1' have nothing, having produced all. The probability is that the circu lar is the product of a brutish mind the work of a ruffianly hoodlum representing a few communistic villains who would cut a throat for a penny and spend the plunder for rum. Now that San Francisco is to be robed in darkness for three months, these rascals will have a fine opportu nity to rally their 100,000 men and fall to with fire and sword. But silly as is the proclamation, it is not to be denied that there are elements in ail our great cities, drawn from the offscourings of Europe, the lazy and brutal fol lowers of Herr Most, among whom such a possibility as outlined in the circular is dreamed of. It would be better for society if this element would test its strength at once, that it may be crushed out so effectually that there will not be seed enough left to start an other crop of braggarts to alarm the timid. The San Francisco receipts for potatoes for the last eight months are 600,3S1 sacks, against S31,397 sacks during the preceding twelve months. From July , S8, to July 1, 1S82, California, 550,087 sacks; Oregon, 244,S31; "Wash ington Territory, 28,210; Utah, S,246; From July 3, 1SS2, to March 1. 1SS3, California, 041,720 sacks; Oregon. S,371; "Washington Terri tory, 2S7. The receipts from this state so far this season are 113,0S0 sacks less than during the corres ponding time last vear. From "Washington Territory shipments so far have been insignificant, while Salt Lake has entirelj' ceased to figure in the San Francisco mar ket. This finds an explanation in the fact that last season a partial failure of the California crop caused high prices which admitted of liberal consignments rrotn other quarters. This year the market has been amply supplpd with the California product, and values have ruled too low to invite a rep etition of last year's ventures. Lieutenant Beuuy has re ceived orders to accompany the Corxnin on her next cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and take with him presents amounting to abont $6,000 to the Indians who treated the sailors so kindly at J5t. .Lawrence bay. Theke has been a decrease of G3,457 immigrants landed in the United states during the first sev en months of the current fiscal year, compared with the same pe riod last year. A Texas "Boom." The rapid growth of our north west communities is a subject of frequent remarks. That other portions of our great Union can furnish material for a "boom" is well illustrated by the history of McGregor, a new town in Texas. A comparatively short time ago it was announced that the new line of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fc railway would cross the Texas and St. Louis railway at a certain point. This was in the afternoon. By the next morning the entire sec tion about the proposed junction was staked oat in house lot-, streets and projected public sqnares. At noon that day the sale of lots opened, and in three hours $5,000 worth had been sold. before sunset 442 lots, covering over 300 acres were taken up. The next day the building of houses and the moving c f peop!" began, and began in earnest. Fi on far out on the prairie, upon all sides, the shanties and houses could be seen coming on rollers. Before night twelve houses were up and as many more had arived. Twice tins number of tcnflj too, had been pitched. On the third da- stores, saloons and a hotel were opened; and be fore night the necessit' of a mu nicipal government and a loek-up was keenly felt and promptly pro vided for. Thus day by day Mc Gregor "boomed." "Within a lew weeks the new city has been tpo ken of as one of the most thriving towns of the southwest frontier. It has iriven birth to a vigorous newspaper, the McGregor Plain dealer, which gives as an item of the town's business the statement that 15,000 bales of cotton had been exported from that place within two months. It hath been often said and sung that some men are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them. To the latter class must belong Senator Tabor, of Colorado, who wins fame bv reason of having six night shirts. This of itself is startling, but the fact that they cost $250 each, "for he himself has said it," caps the climax and places him alongside Fair, of Nevada, and other great statesmen of like ilk. The Columbia college trustees decide that "it is not expedient to educate the sexes together." Time was when Columbia college was a great educational institution. It is evidentty afflicted with the drj- rot. It is just possible that if the old snoozers who constitute the present collegeboard could mustersufiicicnt stamina to peep out over the top of the palings they would re-consider their medieval action.
