Gomngo, who brought the obelisk to Now York, has resigned from the navy and assumed the man agement of a large iron-ship build ing yard in Philadelphia. With the assistance of several capitalists he has leased the shipyard of the Philadelphia and Reading Rail road, and begun the building of vessels. He has already secured contracts for building a large iron sailing ship and for two smaller vessels. The ship is for "W. II. Starbuck, the general agent of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation company, and will be used on the California coast. It will be a. ship of 3,000 tons, and it will be the booond vessel of its kind ever built in the United States, first vessel, a sister ship, is being built bv John Roach. dimensions of the two vessels ;ire: Length, 225 feet; breadth of bnin, 42 feet; depth of hold, 23i feet. Every ship builder would much prefer getting his material free of duty to having an American registry denied to foreign ships. I favor the admis sion of foroign-built ships on the payment of a duty equivalent to the duty on the material of which thoy arc made. He gave statistics of the number of vessels in the coal trade showing that the demand-Tor iron vessels from this quarter will be great. An Ottawa dis patch says that "as the time ap proaches for Wiggins'1 great storm, the interest becomes more inteie. Many timid persons are known to be pi ost rated with nervousness. Telejrranhie ie?orts state that several women have become insane through fear. Wiggins i visibly affected and his appetite is seri ously interfered with. He regrets the storm's coining, aud almost wishes now he had not predicted it in the interest of science. He, however, felt it his duty to his fellow cicatures."
