Wooden Ship Building In Elaine.
In an extended review of wood
en ship building in Bath, Maine,
the Boston Advertiser shows that
Bath is not only the greatest
wooden ship building place in the
United States, but the greatest in
the world. The value of the ship
ping built there within a century
past is estimated to be upward of
$50,000,000. The largest annual
production was in 1854, when 04,
327 tons were built, or 87 vessels.
Of this number 59 were ships. In
the ten years ending 1840 the
building amounted to 09,559 tons.
Th next decade showed a gain of
about 70 per cent., the total being
118,732 tons. Between 1850 and
1860 the product nearly trebled,
and reached 324,S8S tons. The
war period brought the yield of
next term down to 163,539, but
between 1S70 and 1SS0 there was
a gain of 37 per cent., giving a
total for that period of 225,046
tons. During the past 'ear the
tonnage of vessels launched at
Bath was 39,090, with vessels of
13,520 remaining on the stocks.
The cost of a completed wooden
ship, or other new vessel, is reck
oned ot from $50 to 55 a ton.
The vessels launched last year
at all the Maine ship yards gave a
total tonnage of C2,567 tons, with
23,010 tons on the stocks. The
official report of the wooden ship
building of the whole country for
the 3Tear ending June 30, 1881,
places Maine at the head, with 41,
374 tons. Next in rank is Michi
gan, with 5,S52 tons. Then comes
Massachusetts, with G,723 tons;
Wisconsin, 3420 tons; Pennsylva
nia, 3,278; California, 3,197 tons.
In one of the Bath ship j'ards is
a planer, said to be the largest in
the world. It is capable of work
ing a keel piece of timber sixty
six feet long, five feet wide, and
two and one-half feet deep. The
keel comes out of the machine
ready for laying on the blocks, and
perfectly smooth and true on all
sides. A beveling saw is another
capacious machine, which turns
out timber at any desired angle
from the horizontal, and by it
curved timber and ship knees can
be worked true to the line.
The steam engine which runs
these machines runs also a bolt
cutting machine which will nip off
round iron of any diameter up to
two inches; also a large and a small
circular saw, a machine for mak
ing tree-nails, and, in the finishing
shop, a band and circular saw, a
planer, moulding machine, and a
plug and wedge machine. The
waste steam is used in bending
timber. A plant for the construc
tion of iron ships is now under
way, and it is expected that the
first iron vessel will be begun in
May.
Tun "isolated city o the great
northwest," is up the Missouri
river, 1,200 miles beyond Bis
tnark, away from any railroad,
hemmed in by mountains, and at
this season of the year shut out
from all the world. It bears the
name of Benton, in honor of l01d
Bullion," and is the magazine of
the British northwest. It is a sub
stantial town, because lumber is
so costly there that it is economy
to build with briclc. During: nav
igation twenty-two steamboats
carry freight to this remote city,
and the volume of business there
justifies a chamber of commerce
and mammoth brick blocks.
Not long ago a new member of
congress was invited to a dinner.
He described it thus: "There
wasn't nothing on the table when
he got there but some forks and
spoons and bricky-brack. Presently
they brought in some soup As I
didn't see nothin' else, I thought
Fd eat all the soup I could, though
soupis a mighty poor dinner to
invite a feller to. So I was helped
four times: and then came on the
finest dinner I ever see, and there
I set,5' groaned he, "chock full of
ioup."
Washington Gossip.
Referring to the reported
intention of certain Democratic
senators so to act as to enable
the Republican senators to elect
David Davis's successor as presi
dent pro tern., regardless of Sena
tor Mahone, a Democratic senator
said: "Neither party in the
senate is so rich in votes that it
can afford to throw one away.
What good it would do us to have
a Republican elected presiding
officer, why we should help, the
Republicans out of their difficul
ties, or do anything to deprive
ourselves of the advantages which
may come of their troubles, is not
apparent." Senator Mahone does
not coverse in a manner to afford any
indication of what his action will
be, further than that he perceives
no reason for changing from his
course of two years ago, when he
voted with the. Republicans to
fill certain offices with certain per
sons. If these persons are still de
sirous of his vote, they will have
it, unless some better reason for
withholding it than he has yet
seen is given. He makes no de
mands for himself on committees,
and declines all suggestions of
places for friends as the basis of
an arrangement for filling the of
fices of the senate.
A bill has been introduced into
the Victoria parliament to incor
porate Ainsworth & Co., and oth
ers, as a railway and steamboat
company, with a capital of $5,000,
000, It authorizes them to navi
gate Kootenay lake and the Col
umbia river, and to build a railway
between the two sheets of water,
45 miles in length. Extensive ga
lena mines are said to have been
discovered in the district which
the company propose to work.
Another bill, of another company,
authorizes the construction of a
line of railway from Fraser river
to Semiahmoo.
It is thought that W. F. Boolh
by, architect and superintendent
of construction of the insane asy
lum, has "a good thing of it," in
the receipt of S a day from the
state for services in such capacity
though he now and then take
trips to California "for his health,"
during which time it is alleged the
pay goes on. It is to bo hoped
that Mr. Boothby's health shall
improve. It might be cheaper to
employ a skillful physician to
keep Mr. Boothby's sanitary con
dition in a manner more satisfac
tory to the public purse.
Senator Gkoyeb presented the
credentials of election of Senator
elect Dolph in the senate last
Mondaj-.
In two states California and
New Jersey, nine out of twelve
on a jury can convict or acquit.
Forty-one divorce cases were
on call in a Chicago court on one
day of last week.
