vwftat, . 'jmjWMr' HI saisEsa tosss gto SnilB gsnxhivu ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY FEBKUAKY 23, l-3 TJnsinkable ShiDS. UnsinknMe ship, constructed from eloigns by Captain R. B. Forhpj-, of Boston, will, ac cording to Iii in. in a. f.-w vears carry all the first-class goods and first-class passengers for which, we suppose, first-class rates will be charged between Europe and xne unueu states, ne proposes these vessels to be built of steel and to be divided into at least ten compartments, exclusive of those occupied bv machinery and fuel; every compartment to have the means of pumping in air and pumping out water. Such a ship, he thinks, could not very well sink, but if, as an additional secu rity, all the freight was secured in water tight packages, the vessel would float even if every one of the compartments had a fracture. It is more than probable that all heavy and coarse merchandise, such as metals, will be excluded iroiii ine lasi, man ana pasenger steamers. Captain Forbes states that it will only be necessary to see that the compartments of the two lower decks are without defect, and to introduce a complete S3'stem of pumps for air and water, and to adopt the old Chi nese method of packing silks and teas, using either casks or metallic coverings so far as practicable. The hazards of an ocean voyage, he sa-s, will be reduced to a mini mum; but no safety can be guar anteed where steamers run athore, as too often happens. Iron.
