A Cold Day. Though we hear of no one getting left to any great extont, yet it is mani fest that yesterday was a cold day in Astoria. Tuesday evening the mercury was dropping zeroward, and by midnight a cutting southeast wind made belated travelers hasten homeward. Yesterday morning, to the general surprise and inconvenience of many, tho water pipes were found frozen and much trouble ensued. Tho proprietors did all they could to remedy ths inconvenience, and by noon water was flowing freely in the principal mains. Throughout the day travel was a scaly undertaking, and every one was unanimous in the assertion that "it was a cold snap." Tho schools, court-house, and other places of popular resort kept roaring fires, and the wood supply in many instances run short. Charles McCaety. DE. TUTTLE S STATEMENT. This is to certify that I have this day made a careful examination of the body of a man, at the reqwest of Coroner B. B. Franklin, and in tho presence of a jury by him empanelled to mako inquiry as to the cause of death: That I find a cut over the left eye made by some blunt instru ment and resulting therefrom some infiltration of the connective tissue about the eye causing swelling. I find a recont fracture of the lower jaw about three-fourth inch from the center on the right side. I find a fracture of bones of the right fore arm near the wrist and this fracture is a recent one. I find some blood coming from tho right ear. I find a small piece of skin knocked off from tho second joint of thw second finger of the left hand.' I find tho muscles of both legs and both arms tensely contracted as if in violeat struggle I observe no other external marks of violence. I am of tho opinion that the deceased camo to his death by external violence, and that he was not drowned, though found in water; that his body was in water but short timo, not over 48 and probably not 36 hours; that ho has been dead bnt ltttlo longer than that time. Jay Tuttlz, M. D. Actoriaflanunry 16, 1863. inquest by coroner's jury. In ths matter of tho inquisition upon tho body of Andrew Kortontx luin, deceased, we, the undersigned jurors summoned to appear beforo B. B. Franklin, coroner of tho precinct of Astoria in Clatsop courty, State of Oregon, on the 16th day of January, 1883, to inquire into tho cause of his death, and having been sworn accord ing to law and having made such inquisition, after inspecting the body and hearing the testimony adduced upon our oaths, each and all do say that wo find deceased was named Andrew Kortensaluin, wai a native of Russia, aged about 33 years; that he camo to his death on or about Jan. 15th, 1883, in tho county and state aforesaid, from external violence and that thw jury think the violence was caused by somo person or persons to us unknown. All of which we duly certify to this inqaisition in writing by us signed this 17th day of Jan., 1883. T. C. ISOBRtS, L. GlEE, W. J. Barry, P. P. Butekr, T. J. McClanahan. Temperance Rillinrtla.
