An up-country exchange wants "subjects for discussion at a lyceum." How would this de: "What is the tangible effect of a chimera, revolving in a vacuum?" Tho London iAtncet say you should be vuiy careful about drinking cold water. Water will rot the soles of one's boots; thero's no telling what it would do to oneV stomach. "What becomes of all the cacoa nut shells:'"' was lateby asked a Now Orleans fruit-sclier. "J send 150,000 n year to New York, to be ground up with black pepper," was the reply. Tho 18S2 cut of pine in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, will amount to about 10,000,000,000 feat, against 7,708,000,000 tho previous year, and everybody wonders how long it can go on. Yesterday was bright and breezy, but little was dono in the way of shipping movements. The Joanie Landles went up stream; the Selene camo into the dock, and will discharge 450 tons coal. The Columbian, our nearest neigh bor, is one of the most original pa pers on our exchange list. It is run by a man who endontly believes in saying jiiBt what ho thinks, and is al ways welcome in tlm office. Tho commissioner of the general land office has decided that married women aud minors are not entitled to enter timber culture land in Califor nia, Nevada, Oregon and Washington territory under tho act of Juno ", 1878. The Alpha, Capt. Starr command ing, arrived in yesterday afternoon from Tillamook, after a stormy voyage. He has 100 barrels salmon aboard, and four passengers, among them Claude Thayer, son of ex-Govarnor Thayer. The Clara Parker brought down a large cargo on hor latt trip. Un loading j-esterday we noticed 19 M lumber, 50 M. shingles, 20 tons pig iron, 75 barrels of lime, besides brick, flour, and feed, etc. To-day she goes to tho Cowlitz. Thcro are all sorts of canards afloat up ceuntry about, "small pox at Astoria," having been carried in on tha steamer froa San Francisco. Dr. W. D. Baker, health officer at this port says there is not a word of truth in tho repert: that in no instance has thero been any case of the kiud re ferred to. Note tho adv. of J. F. Halloran & Co., in reference to job printing. From long and intimate acquaintance with these parties we feel justified in the belief that they will do what they say. If you want bill heads, letter heads, order books, statements, en velopes, stamped or plain, give them the job and you'll be satisBed with tho styles and prices. Wo give theso par ties a little puff, feeling that they de serve it. Thero is some dissatisfaction in the minds of higli eastern officials m relation to the shelling of an Indian village in Alaska, by Commodore Mcrriman. Geo. IvastrometinolT, who has long resided thcro as an interpre ter, and who was in the city last Sun day, on his way to San Francisco, de clares that ''it was iust right." That such a display will have a better effect than six months' palaver, and that Mernman should be uphold in his ac tion. This neems to be the general opinion. Aatorla Chamber of Commerce. At the last meeting of the Asloria chamber of commerce co isidcntble eloction of officers wan in order, with tho fol!owinK ra5u!l. pre&j,ient, J. Q. A. Buwlby; Vice-President, A. W. Thov show that the or- r ,, -n , i nut tec, from Gosae. bawyer & Packer, j 3 . , , v, and others, were lead. Further action was deferred until more infor mation and statistics be received in relation to the subject. Communications wero read b' the secretary from Senators Graver and Slater, and Representative George, and Representative Brents, of W. T., acknowledging recoipt of memorials j and pledging their active co-operation in the petition. It was resolved that the secretary be instructed to send to tho Portland board of trade a copy of the memorial lately forwarded Prof. Spencsr E. Br.ird, on the sub- joct propagating silmon, with a request that that body endorse the memorial in question aud send such ondorsal to that gentlpin:n, aud our congressional delegation On motion the meeting adjourned. The chamber has now been in exist ence for a nnmbiT of years, and with pride refer to its record as being that of Astoria's progress. It has done a great deal for the plac'; has inaugu rated improvements, obtained conces sions, protested successfully against slights and encroachments, instituted measures for the common prosperity and good, and at all tims3 has been in the van in calliug attention to our wants as a community and devising means whereby those wants and necessities can ibo successfully dealt with. Since lat fall, it has by in incrcased membership and rnewed interest bean able to still further increase tho sphere of its usefulness, and should, :n this instance, but serve as an index of what can bo accom plished by an even wider co-oporation on tho part of our business men. Its acts aud deliberation affect every citizen of the place, and have always tended to increase our prosperity at home and our standing abroad. Attempted Escape. Yesterday morning as Constable Oliver was about taking the prisoners at the counly jail iheir breakfast an attempt at escape was made which was unsuccessful. He says: "I opened tha outer door and then going forward Bet down the basket and opened the iron door directly in front, as I did so there was a rush to get out on the part of those inside; I presented my revolver and ordered them back. Then one said he wanted to 'see mo inside, but the light was better whare I was, so I didn't go in." Found Drowned. About one o'clock yesterday after noon some passcra-by near the Occi dent Packing Co.'s cannery, saw the bod' of a man in the water about knee deep and but a short distanco from the roadway. The body was brought to shore and proved to be Andrew Solomon, a fisherman who was last seen in a saloon on the road way about half-past eleven last Sun day niht. There was an ugly gash ove r tho left temple, but no other marks of violence were found on tho body. A medicine of real merit, prescribed by many leading physicians, and uni versally recommended by thoso who havo used it, as a true tonic, is Brown's Iron Bitters. Shipper & Rybke, No. llt Oak street Portland, aro the bon ton tailors of tho verrepclrci Tin Plate. The rcportc-d action of the house committee on ways and means con cerning tho duty ou tin plats, which is to bo advanced from ono and ono tonth cents to two and ue-fith cents per pound is said io bd instigated by certain Now York parti! who want to establish a tin plato factory in that s-tatc, aud, of course, waul "pro tection." Thera is a Reed doil of injustice under the head of "pro tection," and it has a good deal tn answer for already. This is but ilius tratiTc of tho wholo system which is founded on fraud and upheld by monopoly. To our Columbia cannery -men it will make a little difference. but to tho domoitie consumers ofjedy. Prlre.Tocents. Masai Injector fnv. canned Roods it will make a trcmen-r'" dons iiffereace, the tho ono who hut consumer using to pay for the ... i gentlemen from Tserr York who wish to be 4protected" becaus they think they can make money manufac turing tin if tho government can only be made help them. From present appearances their chance are excel lent. The importation of tin plato into Astoria is an important item: From the 1st of December '8L to the lt of December '32, Astoria imported HS, 782 boxes of tin plate: during the sixteen days of January, there has come 24,921 boxes. A box of tin wiil weigh 109 pounds. The average value of the tinis $6.50 per box. On this there is a duty of ono and ono tenth cents per pouud, or $1.20 a box. Tho government increasing that duty to 2.40 a box would compel every one in the United States who oat canned fruits, vegetables, me.it or fiah to pay extra. Of course tho fruit or vegetable canncr isn't going to loso it; all he can do is just as the man in Arkamaw '.hat stole the mule, "in self-defence" put up the price. Our Columbia cannerymen aro allowed a rebate, so that it will not bear so hard upon them, though the whole thing is onerous. Some of our can neries ship their silmon pack, or a good portion of it, easL They got nothing back in the way of rebate. It takc3 107 boxes of tin to pack a thousand cases of silmon; out of this there is a certain waste, and tho cus tom house authorities, by frequent measurement, havo averaged that al lowance shall bo made forOo cases out of 107. Tha ti3 if the tin is worked up into cans and shipped back to England, the importer gets bnck the dut he paid ou what he is credited with ship ping back, 1cb ten per cent. For in stanco a cannery packs 1,000 cases of salmon; it has paid duty on 107 boxes tin; when tho ship is roady for sea tho government gives back the duty on 9G boxes, say $115, less ten per cent., or 103. o0. But California or eastern packers of fruit, etc, finding their market in this country get no rebate and, eventually, "the dear peo. pie" have to pay. But what's tho dif ference, so thst two or three men in New York can anuts a fortune by being "protected?" even though ten million of people have to contribute to said private fortune without any resulting beaeGt. Circuit Court. In the Circuit, yesterday, a jury was empaneled in the case of Jas. Mc Carty, charged with kidnapping, tnd the trial went on. The evidence was all iu at 7:30 last evening and the case was given to the jury with brief argument.
