George was in the city last Wednesday he conversed with us at considerable letmthrefrardinsf what intimatclv concerns the people of Astoria. In regard to the matter of "The Astoria Land Grant,"1 Mr. George is of the opinion that though all principles of equity demand that if the corporation fail to comply with the conditions under which they got the grant it should revert back to the people whose domain it is, yet, it will be not likely to come up before the present con gress. Our readers will remember an interview with Senator Slater an account of which we published some time ago, in which that gentleman stated his belief that owing to .the extraordinary press o busiuess that matter will not be reached. This view is cororbo rated by Mr. George. He states that the fact of so much business being left over from last session, the pressing demand of measures sure to be introduced at the imme diate opening of congress and the special exigencies of the occa sion coupled with the fact that the present session will be exceed ingly short will probably allow of no opportunity to take up this matter, except in connection with the whole matter of lapsed land grants extensively discussed at the last congressional session. This is no doubt the case, and wiu continue till a cre:it mauv ... b - things now pushed upon congres sional attention shall be given different jurisdiction. There are so many things foreign to the nature and purposes of public legislation that regularly come up for con gressional adjudication that the wonder is the average congress man finds time to do as much as he does. The one great and almost insuperable ob jection that will be made in the last session of the forty-seventh congress to appropriating money for improvements is that it won't do to pile up the appropriations; there has been a howl raised about the river and harbor appropriations of the last session, and as part policy neither party wants to have much to do with appropria ting money this winter. Econ omy will be the shibboleth, and sails must be trimmed and courses taken for '84. Mr. George regretted the defeat of his coadjutor in the commerce committee Page of California who had given material aid to Oregon in advocating her claims heretofore. Mr. Anthony, ol Rhode Island is chuckling over less fortun ate bosses while he points with pride to his copper-bottom ed state con stitution which fences out from the ballot box all foreign-born citizens who don't own real estate.. The joke is in requiring a voter to own land in a state that is nearly all water and not very much of that.
